I play the 80 metal, it will be good?
Project in which he was based?

More gain than what? I don't understand.
Check out clips on my site to get the idea how much gain it has, dirty channel on my reactor is preety close to this. It's not really for metal, doesn't do that scratchy palm mute sounds like dual rectifier for instance, but it has much gain. It can do satriani and vai pretty good, especially when boosted with tubescreamer (set as clean boost)

Bypass the 10k on the second stage cathode with another 10k and a cap in parallel (I make mine footswitchable) and your gain will go up very nicely....
I built the same thing to use with some old Bogen tube power amps I have. The combination sounds incredible.
I usually put another master volume in that can be switched in and out.

I modded my jcm800 back in the early '90s putting a 4K7 in place of the 10K and a .68 uF accross the 820R in the stage before the cathode follower, then i clipped off the little caps accross the volume pot (I hate it!) and across the 470K, it sounded very good and meaty.
10 years ago a switched back to the 10K res, cutting out the .68uF cap, using my pedals to boost the channel, the sound was unbeatable but not enough flexible.

Andyeffect, I think it's a tough build, high tension over there, if you've already worked with tubes it's ok, otherwise an error could be lethal. And I mean LETHAL. And let me warn you about multiple subtle problem you could encounter (I remember for example the instability of the first stage: it drove me crazy in my first attempt to rebuild the preamp unless I've found a trick to work it out!)
