How do you guys organize your resistors, caps, etc

The wall of draws is OK for work but it tends to take-up a wall of space.
These days I try to minimize the storage volume.

QuoteYou need seven buckets. This allows sorting to 10+, 100+, 1K+, 10K+, 100K+, 1Meg+, and oddballs.

When I was a young kid I used to organize stuff like that with separate draws, or within the divided compartments within the draws for small quantities.

When you try to incorporate cap voltages into the equations the whole thing blows out.   You get the same problem with screws because they have different diameters and lengths.

I have used resistor folders at work.  They are actually quite good and take far less space.

This type of thing is good for small stuff like transistors and IC's:

Everything else stays in zip lock bags and packed away but they are organized so I can find stuff.
Things I have large quantities of tend to stay in tubes  (maybe take a few out for easy access.)

Nice one, I've separated them out as Paul suggested for now. The photo albums/resistor folder are probably the best idea in the long run for me.  Quite a discrete solution and easy to scan through. Minimising storage volume is definiitely the becoming more of a priority.  This stuff just takes over!

Cheers.

I use a combination of storage methods. I have the same black and yellow containers with movable storage bins and large lid like R.G. has, I think. I put all my resistors in the larger bins in just two containers but with the labeled bags they came in like you get from smallbear. I'm colorblind so I ain't even going to try and read the color codes of resistors. Leaving them in their baggies until ready for the build is only way for me to stay resistor value error free. The smaller bins and a few of the large ones from these containers house my caps, transistors, and diodes. Another couple containers house my all the different jacks, pots, and battery snaps. Then, for my box and monolithic caps, I store them in a normal wall mountable drawer setup like others have posted. My knobs are all in one toolbox that has a drop down front with 4 removable clear plastic assorted storage bins like when you buy assortments of caps from smallbear.

Floor-mat at the front entrance to my former place of employment. Oh... the irony.

I would love to have parts bins! But I don't have the real estate. I use the little clear bags they often come in. If they don't come in little clear bags, I seem to have enough bags to cover that.
My resistor collection fits in a box that a pair of glasses was packages in. Except a larger sack of 100k and 1k.  Not as nice as bins when putting stuff away.
So I just never put anything away.

I couldn't do buckets. The metal film's extra stripe prevents me from easily identifying resistor values like I used ta.
Here's a good one:
When you decide to clean up, how many loose resistors need to be put away? This is your laziness threshold.  Or whatever.

For smd you can use monthly pill/medication organizers.
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

This stuff just takes over!

Tell me about it.  I started out with ONE assorter box.   :icon_eek:

Who the hell was I kidding??   :icon_rolleyes:

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...

davent

A couple cut down cardboard Ikea magazine holders wit 3x5" ziploc bags for all the small stuff. One of those little multi-drawer cabs for bigger stuff like electro caps.

Ah man, I feel like such a slob seeing that. I do in fact own a couple of those magazine holders but they're currently home some very important, um, I dunno. Bits of paper and stuff.

Please don't judge me!

I don't mind giving up an entire wall for my drawers; I keep my bins in the garage, and the wife almost never goes out there so she doesn't really care what it looks like. The only thing that slows me down is the cost. $25 for a thing of 60 drawers isn't bad, but I keep getting more and more parts, I just got #6 hung up so I'm about $150 into drawers right now :P

Ah I'm not a total slob. Most of my bits are somewhat organised. It just seems to expand. Most small parts orders get fluffed out with other bits I might need in future, just to meet the free delivery threshold. Then when the parts arrive I'm like "ah shit where will I put all this?" Then of course builds happen and it's gets a bit messy.

After much heated debate and compromise, I've been afforded this shelf in a sort of pantry cupboard or most of my main storage.

I've got my sights set on taking over the entire cupboard. Shouldn't take too long at this rate.
