Triple trem attack! A few tremolos that I finished tonight for some friends. :) (FYI, the color is deceiving. The right side "speed" knob flashes green with the rate, the left "mix" knob is the status indicator)

Dang, I need some calipers.

I tried your PCB mask trick, looks so cool! the red ones are preparing to go into a 1590A. :D

artifus

you could mask off the pads with a blob of blue tack or whatever before spraying.

i haven't had problems with it yet, and neither has Guero, as you can see by his awesome builds. :D

I'm considering tinning them beforehand though. Should make it super easy to go through the paint for a solder joint.

davent

You can solder right through the lacquer with no problems. Tinning would just be an unnecessary extra step as the lacquer's going to prevent the copper from oxidizing and hampering soldering, (which is why you tin in the first place is it not?)

So laquer actually does good to your soldering? ???

deadastronaut

^ i would have thought it would 'gunk' up your carefully preserved iron tip...hmmmm...

tinning also makes heat transfer more efficient, no? That's why it's easier to solder something that is tinned?

I have not had problems with the spray paint and my Hakko tip. I clean mine quite a bit during projects, though, even before this spray paint mask business. :)

The thermal conductivety of copper (think high end cooking pots & pans) is many, many times greater then that of either lead or tin so i'll stick with my assumption that tinning mainly serves as a preventative to copper oxidization.

Like azrael, i frequently clean my iron tip and can't say i've ever noticed any gumming up as a result of the lacquer, the lacquer appears to pretty much vaporize on contact with the iron, something else to breath in.

As to lacquer helping the soldering, again it's just another measure to prevent oxidization (and looks cool) so yes it should be helping long as it's applied soon after the copper is cleaned, before the copper has much chance to oxidize. (Again my assumptions).

Say what you will, but pretinned wire solders a lot easier and faster than non tinned wire.  :icon_biggrin:
