wire terminals

Hi,

I think I saw (in some pedal pictures) that wires are connected using wire terminals.
Can I use this for connecting audio signals? or its better left for power supplies and such?
When is this method useful or recommended? what kind of terminals are common? what kind of crimping tool is required?
