I wonder if a bigger LED would do crazy stuff when it comes to clipping.

Anyways I have a store locally that sells LEDs about 3/4 that size.

just checked my local store, they have LEDs up to 12mm in diameter and they're amazingly cheap.

white is about 0.7$, blue is like half a dollar and rest of them like 0.3$  i think that's cheaper than 3mm I've recently bought.

There's a store locally that sells them in about a 1/2 inch size.  That's probably the 12mm.  It's all the way downtown though and only open bankers hours.

You need to look for LED clusters ... like these ones here .

Mind you, Vf = 6V & If is 30mA !
