finish idea and "how to" (spiderweb)

After all those great swirls i see floating around i think i'll add some sort of tutorial as well. it's kind of going into the wild, so be prepared.

it's not a real finish, it's more something to add to a finish. here it's on inked paper that was epoxied on an enclosure:

this is a real spiderweb. i think it can look great on wooden enclosures for example.
years ago when i was in art school i developed this technique to catch spiderwebs onto a surface and then used them in all sorts of graphic works.

-finish your enclosure the way you want it after drilling.

-go hunt for a nice looking web (preferably not inside the house) and leave it as it is :p

-add a thin layer of clear lacquer to the enclosure. as thin as possible to get it to be a little sticky real quick. you never know something destroys your precious web while you're away from it. you might want to hire a family member to guard it from birds, insects, wind and maybe other family members.

-take your enclosure outside and bring gaffer tape, cardboard, spray paint (you want a color has a little contrast with the rest of the finish) and a cookie.

-with the cardboard and gaffer tape you try to cover everything behind the web. especially if the web is on your neighbours house. try not to break any threads or you might have to find a fresh untouched web.

-when you're happy with it spraypaint the web. spray pretty close but not too close or you'll destroy it. too far and you're messing up everything around the web/cardboard and you waste a lot of paint. it should look like it's completely covered in coloured morning dew. it will have loads of very small drops of paint on it. too much paint will also destroy it.

-the web is now heavy and won't stand wind as well as it normally would so be quick to take your enclosure (that was on a safe distance from the spraypaint and in danger of being polluted with whatever flies around outside because it is sticky)

- gently push the enclosure through the web. i allways try to do this from the back towards me so i can see where threads eventually break and i can stretch it a bit with my other hand if needed.

-at this point i drop everything except for the enclosure and rush inside the house to get it to safer surroundings. add another layer of clear coat to seal it and go pick up your stuff outside. set the guarding family member free and give him/her the cookie as a reward.

-finish the clear coat like you normally would. (the one pictured has satin shine lacquer)

i hope someone likes this idea and uses it to make stunning finishes. :D

How did you get the idea to use spiderwebs?  Let me guess... you realized you had a project due the next day so you ran outside with a can of paint and decided "Hey, a painted spider web would be fast!"

Nevertheless, that's some pretty awesome stuff.

that would be one possibility. but we had the freedom to do whatever we wanted. every six weeks we had to show are work to a jury. no work or bad work meant a bad grade. so you could just sleep and have fun (and we did too) and noone would tell us to do otherwise. they only said "maybe you should start working if you want good grades..." :p

Shoudln't the spider get at least half the cookie for making the web?! Wait till the spider's union hears about this!

That is very creative. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, that is pretty neat. Now watch as PETA gets on your case. (a joke)
Haven't you seen Charlotte's web? (a joke)
