10mm LEDs as Clippers

Has anyone tried this out?  I did a casual glance between the specs of a 5mm and a 10mm on the Radioshack site and they looked comparable.  I'm working with someone on a guitar with onboard effects, and one of the ideas kicked around was mounting the clipping LEDs on the outside of the guitar to allow for some creepy devil eye effects.  I figure the 10mm would look better than the 5mm, but before I get all excited, I was wondering if anyone has tried this already to no great success.

I think this has already been discussed.  Search for it and see if you can find anything. 

Meanwhile, if the forward voltage is any different than a 5mm, then perceivable there could be a difference.  As I recall they're no different, so all a 10mm is only going to take up space.
