Jake, what guitar is that in the second picture? A PRS? It's beautiful!  :o

Yeah, it's a Custom 22 that I'm very fond of. Behind the door to the closet is my CE24 from '87. Also a really great player. My fellow students are often wondering about my minimalistic decorating in my apartment, till they see my guitar collection. Priorities are the key to this  ;D

I finally got out and tidy'd up my electro space and did some building to incorporate three kinda distinct work areas.
This is the stomp space looking towards the modelling space. The big white out area is where I'll put a bunch of deep shelves in the hold all the guitars and guitarish instruments I make.

Then I've tidied up the tube space and am almost ready to get back into tube amps and stuff.

On my bench is two things I'm putting together at the mo'

Front in a double minimum theremin so I can use two hands! Behind it is Earthtonestudio's wah using the proximity drive.

Since I'm into this tidy up thing I've also done a few hours in the workshop proper. The above would be termed the clean room where assembly and fine work goes on but then we have the dirty room.

I know it still looks pretty messy but thats just because alot my hand tools are on the bench. Apart from this I have one more space where I do all the metal work. grinding, welding etc and thats really dirty and ultra messy so we won't even go there.
Monkey see, monkey do.

Anyone interested in the minimum theremin?

I'm using a 16pin 4049 as opposed to what looks like a 14pin 4049 on the schematic. Hopefully it'll still work. An inverter is still an inverter I hope!

I this what is sitting in your UFO.  We have a legend here that we call "la chasse galerie".  I guess yours is the modern version.

It's the story about some lumberjacks that want to go out of the woods to go see and dance with their darlings.  But they are far away from the city, it's winter (everything is frozen), and all they have is a canoe.  So they decide to sell their souls to the devil so the demon can make their canoe fly.  They go to Montreal and they dance and drink some Jamaican rum this way (flying canoe).  When the morning comes they have to go back to their camp.  But now the problem is that they are kinda drunk.  So they fly back home in their boat with great difficulty and they crash in a field somewhere.  So it's seems that it's not a good idea to sell your soul to the devil so you can go party in town.   :D

I think you must have the wrong chip there.
You absolutely must have a CD4069UBE (14 pins) as on the schematic.
When you are using digital chips as analog components, there is usually NO substitute - and it often matters who manufactured the chip, as well.

Still, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. It might work.. but if it doesn't, the first thing I would do is build it using the component specified.

sean k

Well, there you go. I just march on ahead regardless thinking any 4049 is a 4049... otherwise I wouldn't do much. Seems I can get CD4049UBE here in New Zealand through digikey which I didn't know about. Now I've learnt about a new supplier. Thankyou Mr Perry!

Of course I'll still try the other 4049's.

Sean, I have to point out that the circuit specifies a CD4069UBE.
That is a CD40*SIX*9UBE, not a CD4049.

I realise this is not relevant to the topic of benchtops & workspaces so if the moderator wants to move it off, that's OK by me, but I had to say it :icon_wink:

4049 or 4069 will work in that circuit, either buffered or unbuffered.  Probably even a bipolar inverter would work, who knows.  That circuit is pretty robust, if not the easiest thing to keep in tune.

However, the pinouts are COMPLETELY different.  Check the datasheets.

That proximity wah looks way better than mine!

This is my tiny workplace... in fact...this is a corner in my living room. Yeah... it is pretty crowded...just consider I share this living room and one other room (sleep) with my wife... on day we'll have some more space ;)

sean k

Paul, I see that now, the 4049 as opposed to the required 4069, and I can't for the life of me think or realise why I choose another hex inverter or even why I ended up with 4049 written on my copy of the schematic... but there you go. I did, and from what Earthtonestudio says it might work inspite of my tinkering. I used R.A.Penfolds data book to get the pinouts for the 4049 and I think the pinouts are better for that one to make a more elegant design. ( I just tried scanning the drawing but it wasn't any good  ::))

Earthtonestudio, that design of yours for the wah is so elegant it demanded something kinda etherial and I'm always reminded, when proximity comes up, of theremins with valves and Teslaesque devices so I had to do something like I have. But don't worry, I really liked your original hardcopy and mine would have turned out differently, and alot more like your own, if I could have found an old fan plate from a PC power supply, but I couldn't, so the teapot lid and it's bakelite knob kinda set the aesthetic. The teapot lid was chosen because the aluminium is quite thin and has a nice convex surface and the knob is small enough to stop the foot from making direct contact. I enjoy making that first choice of hardware then following through to the conclusion that first choice demands.

Auke, wonderful, you must have a very considerate and loving wife! You lucky fellow  :icon_biggrin:

I used to shopfit for a guy in flash street who came from Hong Kong and his ability to use space efficiently was a profound learning experience for me. We, in countries with lots of space who, in turn, demand space to do what we think we need to, miss out on the experience of having to make do in confined spaces. But if one is lucky enough to feel the pinch and learn to adapt to small spaces... and eventually acheive greater space... its amazing how much can be done!

Umm,where I'm supposed to be working... but it's untidy.

The thing is I like sitting down when I work... I've just realised that, not standing. :icon_rolleyes:

Looks quaint I know but... I've been working here recently.

And all the stuff I use is spread accross an empty front room.

"Untidy" ?

Holy sh*t that is epic. Theres obviously no woman living in this house, LOL ! :icon_lol: But on the off chance that there is, God bless her.  :D

hummm that fire place looks like a good amp cab oh wait what about that lazy boy we could make that into a body rock controlled wah.
lazy baby??
ok 2 questions.
:icon_question: who's making it and
:icon_question: Who's going to a show with that in their pedal board?
