AMZ Mosfet Booster: works, but little gain

I built the Mosfet booster from Jack (AMZ). It works, but not like I wanted. The increased gain is really low.
Is this normal? If so, how to increase the gain?

Does the 5k pot needs to be log or lin?

Thanks...

another question; I bought a BS170P from Zetex, but lost it; so I used a normal BS170. Will the Zetex make a lot of difference to the tone, you think?
(High quality, low noise version of the standard BS170 with exceptional characteristics. Made by Zetex.)

use a 5K reverse log pot for optimal performance.

Nice tip, thanks.

Ik think I used a 5k log. Jack probably meant a 5k lin, right? That is probably the problem here.

Still, check your biasing.  There is no trimmer but the bias resistor values are initial/nominal and should be adjusted according to your preference for biasing.

I built that one and thought it had plenty of gain. I also thought it didn't sound very good. I turned it into a rangemaster and think it's now one of my favorite pedals.

I think it's not supposed to "sound good", it's designed to be a transparent (not adding any color to the tone) booster.

Ya know, I fergot about this.
Added a trimpot to adjust the bias of the BS170.
