Here's my idea for a custom Ruby...

Its two Ruby circuits powered by a 12V transformer (regulated and filtered). The two circuits will be switchable, one will be a standard(ish) Ruby the other will have Bassman mods.

Right after the input and before the Ruby's will be a Valvecaster http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=63479.0 . It will be like the on-board distortion. It will be switchable so its not always on. Transformer + tube = cool pedal.

This will all be mounted in one enclosure. On the enclosure will be a speaker. There will be a switch though to select between the speaker and a speaker out jack.

Here's a diagram to help visualize it all....

Anyone have any suggestions or see any issues. Any input would be good.

I realize now that I need output selectorswitch instead of that switch to select Ruby's.

just use a switching jack for the speaker out instead of that seperate switch

I was told about these...where can I find one and how do they work?

Switching jacks can be bought at most stores. Banzai carries them, I'm sure Mouser does too!

Be sure to only have one Ruby connected to the speaker at a time. Problems can arise when having two amps in parallel on one load, when not made for bridging. Have a DPDT switch between the valvecasters output and the ruby, and the ruby's out and the speaker. Use a 3PDT if you want a LED.

Wouldn't it be possibe to use just one Ruby and have the Bassman mod switchable using a 3pdt, switching over the two cap changes and the one resistor change?

Probably but that's not how I roll. 8)

i doubt thats TO MUCH for you  ;)

but if you want to switch between two circuits even though there the same except for two caps
then may i suggest a 3pdt! and maybe make it a rack mount unit with a footswitch! man that would be fun
like the R2D2 (two Rat's in a rack mount)

Here's one way...

How does this look? Thanks so much for the schem!

Also the Ruby looks almost identical to the Noisey Criket. Besides the tone control (which I hear sucks) and the grit switch they are identical..well almost (3.3K vs 3.9K and what not).

Anyways is that grit switch a fun feature?

I was looking at the LM386's datasheet. It seems the amp really would operate best with a 16ohm load. I plan on using a 4ohm speaker, my IC will get a bit hot then me thinks.
