Build Report DR BOOGIE (BOOGEY) with sound clips

Hi, just finished Dr Boogie (Boogey) project.

I used four J201 and one MPF102
Here's the details

Power supply regulated 9.37V

At first, I used all J201 Fet but this high gain circuit was sure hard to tame.
So I experimented MPF102 at Q1 and the result was not meaner or aggressive like all J201 components so I shifted to Q5 the results was very cool, I was able to tame the squeal and retained the agressiveness plus now I could dial up my Boogie volume until 3'0clock before it squeal. This thing is very loud Quarter to half volume and AMP set to mid volume on band practice is enough.
Mod: Tonestack   
I only use the treble pot 25 kB as my TONE knob. I change 6.8nf into 1.5nf to scoop the mid, change C11 22nf to 1uf for more bass, replaced 100k fixed resistor for bass pot, 2k resistor for mid pot, 10k resistor for presence pot.
Mod: Drive pot
I substitute 1meg and used 500kA, I hear no difference using 1meg maybe slight I don't know... beside I'm reserving it  to mode my tubescreamer drive pot. Also, I series 50k resistor between ground and lug 1 of the drive pot so when turn minimum drive is not awkward.

Unfortunately I don't have a good quality camera to capture more of the tone just a pocket size camera. Anyway here's some clips hope would inspire..

Tonewise, technique-wise it sounds fantastic. You are a good player too.

My only friendly criticism is please tune your guitar- esp in the first vid it really sounds off with that first chord.

But otherwise it sounds really nice. Good job!

Guys,
That's the problem when your guitar doesn't have locking nuts   Constant tremolo dive will slightly off tune some old string. I forgot to retune after some practice before I recorded the clip. Excited huh...

BTW I only used Wah on Voodoo part on bass clip and the rest only Boogie with Fender amplifier tone set up all to 12'0clock level. 

Furthermore, I forgot to say I used one tantalum 1uf only on the q4 source that stop feedback. I'm not sure if this was the remedy.

R.G. /Gaussmarkov/Electrictabs what's the difference using polarized and non-polarized cap on those fet source to ground? Anyone... Gaussmarkov indicates non-polar on his schem but Electrictabs uses polorized.

Dschwartz, that's also my problem before, when I did learn DIYing I almost got no time for guitar practicing.... But I later realized my main goal was PLAYING GOOD GUITAR
So I did change my rule "Practice first before DIYing" Sort of balancing both hobby.

I love my dr boogie too, it's probably the best distortion pedal I've made and even played. I also second the DIY eating into playing time It needs  balance.

You will find there are a lot of members of this place that also post on ax84 and elsewhere, there is a lot of crossover. good luck

definetly, dr boogey is the best (if you like metal and shred. it even can handle a little blues)..i use it with an eq for live situations and man!!! it totally kick ass!!!

about the tube amps.. well, i have to say that is no picninc building one of those.. it take a lot of hard work.. and i´m not speaking a bout the electronics.. finding párts, making the chassis, the holes, the freakin´wiring...geezz.. you have to be like a master woodcrafter, tool maker, metal worker, and even a priest (to pray God to make the thing work)..

I started with a jcm800 for a friend who got all the parts first, and he made the craftsmanship. i just did the electronics part (it was my first project!!!!, but i had a bit of an electronic background, and knew how to read schems and all)..it took us 6 months to make the thing work. but it never distorted!!!!

(we recently opened it up, and realize that i connected the input to the 2nd stage..no wonder it was so clean.. now is ok)

the second amp is a fender PA100 i totally gutted out and remade the circuit ( my design)..the chassis and parts were already there..

i totally reccomend aiken amps page..really good info there..

Most of the diy-ing I do anymore is amps. They are just a lot of fun. But the woodwork and chassis machining is a lot of work.

Wow man thanks guys for your input... Hanglow for the links... Dschwartz, John, DougH and spud for the tips.
There are many local electronics shop and store in our downtown mostly making their own model solid state   amplifier with thier own mojo. Some are for karaoke and have for instrument amplifier too. Maybe I could order the woodworking part for them but the only problem is the vacuum tube parts availability.

+1 on that,man! I've built 7 Dr.Boogeys,2 BSIABS,10 fet boosters,20 ZD clones,1 delay,1 chorus and a compressor, and it did hurt my guitar playing abilities.

I hear you guys, making these do take lots of time and energy especially to build some of the FANTASTIC pedals that have been shared by the talented and not-so talented (me) on this forum!  I'm almost the opposite, with figuring out 4 songs, recording tunes in Reason and Cubase, dialing in tones on outboard effect processors and video editing, my poor 2nd half built Matsumin Tube OD is still sitting in it's box waiting for a home...  BUT my 1st generation Matsumin IS a major part of my rig/sound right now tho!

It´s a pretty ironic issue..
i used to play like 2 hours a day, to a point i could play my ass off..started perfectioning my sound, and making my own gear, and suddenly i am more skillful with the soldering iron than with the guitar, reading resistors at the fly, understanding circuitsand stuff..

it´s like that "married with children" chapter, when Kelly has to learn sports facts and starts to forget everything she already knew cause there was no more space in her head..
