Innocent Fuzz Factory question

I was just wondering how it was able to get such a huge amount of fuzz from such low gain transistors (mine had 2n404a's in it).  Someone care to enlighten me?

The Silicon transistor at the beginning of the circuit gives a big boost and consequently adds alot of fuzz. The general concept of the circuit is a Fuzz Face with a hot booster juicing the front of it. Add some extra knobs and that's basically what's going on in a Fuzz Factory.
