Good fuzz for stoner rock

Hi all,

I've made a fuzz face, I loved the sound but it has some problems, a "ouiinouiiiinouinnn" appears sometime even if i fixed it before and works perfectly. the probleme comes back. I give up this circuit to put another effect in the box.

But  I love the fuzz sound, and even if I've a big muff (modified to have more mids (analogman's mod))  isn't the sound I'm looking for. I search a good fuzz for stoner rock (QSTA, nebula, kyuss ect.....). Powerful, maybe hi-gain , without mid scoop,  not a lot of pots or switches, a great sound. I don"t want use germanium transistors, I wish use sillicon transistor to have more gain. I don't want also, an odd fuzz with some crazy sounds like scrambler ou fender blender. I'm looking for a useable fuzz for power chords and leads.

So do you know a good fuzz for this ?

fuzz face 70's ? (fuzz face with mids pot, similar to fulltone 70's ?)
jordan bosstone ?
univox superfuzz?
a fuzz face with mods ?
something else ?

Yesterday I used the search fonction and I saw the Jordan Bosstone was very appreciated here with the univox superfuzz.

So I'm waiting your advices and opinion. :)

thx

Try the whisker biscuit at RunOffGroove
"Consistency is the Hobgoblin of Small Minds!"

Gus Smalley clean boost, Whisker biscuit, Professor Tweed, Ruby w/bassman Mods, Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer, Zvex SHO, ROG Mayqueen, Fetzer Valve, ROG UNO, LPB1, Blue Magic

the Bosstone is a nice pedal not to mention a pretty easy build. Dragonfly's VMF is also a good sounding pedal. the Colorsound Overdriver is a big bad pedal. i just finished up a mean Ross Distortion that i was playing with. i like all these pedals but, i can't and won't say that they'll give you a specific sound. they are all big and mean though. rylan

You will want to make all of them in the end ....  :icon_twisted:

Modded Fuzz Face

I just drew this up real quickly - don't have time to change it right now - the cap from lug two of gain pot should be 10úF

not all but some of them maybe ;D

I want to do a foxx tone machine clone with the switch of mids from fulltone ultimate octave, I must finish my  project before.

I don't say it but  I search a fuzz more "bassy" than "trebly".  I don't find words to explain that but the sound of "the song of the deaf" and "firth it giveth" is a good begining.

nelson , your schemtic seems to be really cool, but why have you change the input cap for 220n ? you loose bass no ?

Nobody has opinions about the fuzz face 70's ?

It retains all the bass without getting "farty". Try it and see. Should take about 20 minutes to breadboard.

Sure but I haven't breadboard :-\

I recommend you buy one - allows you to build circuits very cheaply to try them before committing them to an enclosure.

yes  I must find one in store close to me,  but i don't know if it's expensive. But it's true it can be cool to test circuit to see and ear if the sound is good. I did a lot of things on veroboard i didn't keep,  I spoiled veroboards and solders, all landed in trash :-\.

I got a cheap one from Radio Shack for $12-15.  It's got more than enough room for most of the simple stompbox stuff.

I've had good luck getting that sludgy stoner sound with the Great Cheddar/ Big Cheese, with an opamp boost (like microamp) on the front end to squish it out.  That circuit has great character (70's, trashy and transistorized, but with good EQ choices) and has proved good for playing music in a way a lot of fun pedals haven't.  That and the woolly mammoth on bass are legitimately stony.  Now it's time to put some Sleep on...

try the Bee Baa in the full range position.

I built this yesterday, nice and easy with BC109Cs (both hfe approx 550) Sounds great unless gain is on full when it loses stability, just backed off slightly it has a great tone. I could do with just a bit more sustain but this is a great sounding circuit,

fuzzo, try Axis Face Silicon from fuzz central, it's a FF type circuit with Si transistors, tweaked to sound "warm" like a Ge fuzz face, and the input cap is nicely chosen, no farty bass etc etc...

ps: what amp are you playing?

I built the GGG 70's Fuzz Face ... and it's evil. :icon_evil:

thanks for all your answers :icon_biggrin:

Quotewhat amp are you playing?

A peavy valveking 112, but I would change it for another amp (but I don't find a nice amp for my taste).

it has a good or bad sound ? (I saw the fulltone 70 is based on the same schematic ::)) the youtube vidéo of ProGuitarShop is great but it's a vidéo to sell it, so we can doubt about the sound.

i think Josh Homme used a big muff in Kyuss

Yes, that's the one!

No probs with temperature instability and you can use all sorts of Si transistors, search the forums, there is a list of low hfe Si transistors that sound good in Axis Face.

Anyways the amp is the key for this type of music, I used an Orange 50w clone and now I'm using a diy Hiwatt Custom 100, and with these kinds of amps, it's virtually impossible to fail to get a good tone., stoner or no stoner! :)

Someone mentioned Sleep?

Personally, I find crancking bass all the way, mids almost all the way and then work out with the treble to not to sound to harsh, and with a loud amp, eq like that, C tuning and a fuzz face, you're in Dopesmoker territory in no time...

I don't like the muff because it's scooped, you can boost the mids on the amp and compensate that a bit and it could work that way...

Ever heard of the band Annihilation Time? It's not stoner rock, more of a rock/hardcore band, but the guitarist(s?) uses a double muff, I remember he got a good tone out of it and it wasn't scooped.

Both guitarists from Truckfighters used bigmuffs and they fiddled with the tonecontrols on the amps for some time to get the most out of the sound, and not to sound too mid scooped...

I could talk all day long about these things...

ps:  search the forums for Nelson's Citrus (orange) amp simulator, it can get fuzzy and it should sound nice!
