DIY 'Detune' effect: what comes close?

I'm working on a Small Clone Chorus (Tonepad) and got to thinking: is there a way to create a subtle pitch shift/chorus like a 'detune' effect?
The Zoom Choir I had about four years ago had that feature and I was wondering if there is a way to replicate it, or should I set the chorus to a subtle setting.

Any thoughts?

I did the " space sounds " mod on my ce-2 and got some de tune sounds. It sounded like it was modulating between three pitches. I like that slight out of tune sound too. I first started recording on cheap tape players and I guess that is the sound I still gravitate toward some times. In the age of super pitch correction its nice to have a sound that not too perfect. If its good enough for Dave Davies its good enough for me.

What is the "space sounds" mod for a CE-2??

The Boss Dimension C is pedalwise about the closest analog detune sound, the concept being it is two parallel chorus units, swept by the same LFO, but one is inverted, making one pitch shift up whilst the other doth pitch down, then when the LFO changes directions, the opposite happens, but you can't tell because one voice is always slightly flat while the other is slightly sharp.

I tried that with two small clones and liked it!  Used a basic inverting opamp to invert the LFO from #1 and send that to #2 instead of its own LFO.  Then took the #2 wet output and mixed that in to #1 where the #1's  wet ouput gets mixed with the dry.

But before I got it in a box (too many design ideas for the project, creeping featurism) I embarrassingly picked up a behringer clone of the DC-2.

I know what you mean, I like the de-tune better than chorus, like on the Boss PS-3 and PS-5, it's a good, musical effect.

Dammit, that's not available in the US yet according to the Behringer site... Are you in the US and if so where did you get it?

EDIT:  Never mind, I found a place (google is my friend) and put one on order. Not bad- $35 shipped. I've been curious about hearing this for a long time. Should be fun to compare to the PS-5.

I *love* the detune effect too, and use it on my PS-5 when I need "space". It sounds stunning in stereo.

BTW, how does the Behringer analog unit compare to the PS-5?

I like your Small Clone idea- seems like it would be pretty simple to DIY your own detune if you wanted. :icon_wink:

Thanks guys. That's pretty cool. I just finished up a dual-phaser (two BYOC Phaser kits in one box, toggling between 4-stage and 8-stage phasing), so I'm not in the mood for that much wiring again. I'll keep an eye out on the 'bay for a Zoom Choir again.

Not trying to nail his sound, but that's what EVH started using on his guitar heavily around '5150.' It's like a 1/2 cent down or something, mixed with his original signal and gives a slight chorus effect in the end. Interesting about the Behringer stuff; slightly off-topic, but has anyone rehoused a Behringer yet? I don't know if any of them sound good enough to be worth it, but I haven't heard any yet.

I haven't either. The CC300 gets good reviews that I've seen so far. Someone at HC reviews compared it to their DC-2 and said it sounded very good. For $35 it's worth a shot to me, if for nothing else than to satisfy my curiosity. If it's good enough to stick on my board I'll at least use a looper with it so I won't wear out the switch.

BTW if you want pitch shifting, whammy and intelligent harmonies along with detune, I would recommend the Boss PS-5. I've really enjoyed mine.

IMHO, behringer pedals kick serius a## for the bucks..BUT they have 3 major flaws...PS filtering, nasty bypass circuits and enclosure shielding..

i think rehousing a behringer is a pretty good idea, put bigger caps on the voltage input, make it true bypass, and a metal enclosure and, i´ll bet is no difference with the overprized-Mojo-vintage crap out there

For those who don't know what mods I am talking about here is a link to the page I got them off of.

I have done all of the mods on that page and have to say it turns the humble chorus into a different beast all together.

i didn't find the "space mods" anywhere  ???

I have a BYOC Chorus that I modded to "Fully Loaded" specs which let you get into all kinds of flying saucer territory.  There's quite a bit of info on that on the BYOC site.
