Big Muff - how to get farty broken up sound intentionally?

Hi all,

I'm building a Big Muff as per GGG layout.  I would like to know of opinions on builds to intentionally get that farty, way too broken up sound on the low notes.  I think a lot of people get this sound by bringing the tone down and cranking the gain?

But I'm after that sound without having to kick the gain up too much at all... are there any mods that might work this way for me? Most mods I see are to smooth it out or to make it "creamier" etc.

I found a clip of a little big muff on youtube - listen to the broken up sound when the guy plays the low E string in the first minute or two of the clip

That's pretty much what I'm after...

Thanks
Jonathan

That sounds like a standard Big Muff Pi to my ears. Mine does that. It shouldn't take too much to get you there.

The "mods" I did to mine were to change the coupling caps to 0.1uf (I think - it's been a while) and I used lower gain transistors. Somewhere around the 150 to 250 hfe. So, it's similar to a Ram's Head version. I had a Ram's Head on the bench when I did this and I got as close to that sound as I could.

jonathan,
you could always mess with putting in a bias pot (http://www.diystompboxes.com/wiki/index.php?title=Simplemods#Simple.2C_Easy_Mods.2FTips_.26_Techniques) .  that would certainly allow you to get more of a "splatty" sound.  Also, consider messing with the clipping diodes...

Thanks guys, I'll give it a shot (going to finish building it now) and report back!

Yo

If you use 1uf coupling caps like the 80's version you will get very farty.

Surely a voltage sag pot would offer this kind of sound possibility also!?

Try it on one of the transistors !
Where is that voltage drop circuit, IIRC it used the front end of Nurse Quacky, hit a note and an adjustable amount of voltage drop occurs, oh..it was a DIYSB effect challenge entry.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

does this sound broken? i like it!
well, try the enlarging the coupling caps in the late stages of the BMP...

my total killer experience with a bmp is plugging it in front of a cranked orange amp, all controls midnight.  :icon_evil:
Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar.  If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.
