IMO, a big part of the "Supro Page" sound is the distortion provided by the paraphase phase inverter. People at ax84 have been building paraphase amps for a while. Here's an example of the sound: http://ricktone.rickcampbell.org/cgi-bin/getimg.cgi/rt124exp6v6_lotta_5a.mp3

Here's some more examples. Note the "drone" sound in the distortion:

These are with various output tube types but you can still hear the characteristic "growl".

would say this like a smoother Tube Screamer? perhaps a little darker?

I'm getting that vibe from the recordings and it maybe just what I need.

Two new clips have been added to the runoffgroove.com Sounds page to allow builders to compare the Supreaux, Supreaux Deux, and the actual Supro amp that inspired those projects.

The "heavier" clip requested by John Lyons and posted earlier in this thread has also been added.

This characteristic "growl" is typical of strong 2nd harmonic distortion.  The paraphase phase inverter is clearly asymmetric when compared to the traditional "long-tailed pair" phase inverter used in most Fenders and Marshalls.  As the Supreaux and Supreaux Deux both use exclusively class A stages, there is a strong 2nd harmonic content as well that helps recreate this aspect.

Sounds very cool.

I never see anyone comment about the Double D.  From the soundclips that sounds like one of my favorites.

Any opinions?

Is it maybe that the IC is becoming tough to get?

Is there an original schematic of the Supro 16T online? - Couldn't find it at schematic heaven.

Sebastian has it right.  Coincidentally, it is at Schematic Heaven as well: http://schematicheaven.com/bargainbin/gretsch6151.pdf

the DD - I built it, and I use it for those 'portable' jamming sessions- a guitar, one or two pedals and a combo amp. I've got other pedals in my rack that I prefer (note: not saying are better, just I prefer) but the DD is a good one for less formal ocassions.

I've never really fiddled around with it, either, but I've always found Brian and Sebastian's circuits to be pretty close to what I want on first build! Thanks, guys!

(The 4049 is becoming tough to get? Oh. I'll have to keep a closer eye on those tubes of them I have! :D )

I didn't say that.   :o  I think it's quite available.   ;D

Very cool! I've been using the original Supreaux for some time. I may have to try to convert it to the new version.

Sorry, I misunderstood the "Is it maybe that the IC is becoming tough to get?" part. What IC are you referring to? If something's getting rare, I like to stock up! :D

Awsome!! Just what I was waiting for. If it ever cools a little here in this god forsaken desert wasteland I can get back out to the garage and put one together.
