I just found a site that explains how to anodize aluminum at home but they also said that cast aluminum doesn't work so good because of the impurities.  Does anyone know if there are certain types of boxes that we use for effects that are not cast aluminum?  if anodizing is possible then it could be a viable alternative to painting since it changes the composition of the aluminum to be much harder.

I guess there are machined aluminum boxes out there but I don't know where to get them. My Behringer Ultra-G direct box is a machined anodized aluminum, for instance. The THD hot plate attenuators are another example, as are some of the automotive power amps I've seen.

There's a few different extruded aluminum enclosures out there that might be good for stompboxes. Some nice looking ones are made by Boxes, Inc. and I know Allied carries them. I've seen a different style of extruded aluminum box being sold by Circuitspecialists.com
