They are called "LED bezels" so if you search on that at a parts site you should be able to find them.

The only beef I have with them, is that you have to put them in from the outside of the box.
So if you want to take the effect out of the box altogether, you need to desolder :icon_mad:

Paul, you can get clips that slot onto the legs of LEDs.  They're wired so you just solder the other end to your board.  That aside, all the bezels I buy in the UK mount the LED from the inside of the box (a rubber/plastic bung keeps the LED held in place), so what you're describing isn't an issue.

I think someone here once said that they're intended for a different use, so you can probably get them cheaper described as something else.  A bit fiddly to get the LED in, but once there the connection is secure (yet easy to remove).  A bit of heat-shrink doesn't go amiss as the wires are flimsy.

Yes, all the ones I've used work like that too. Although this doesn't apply to Australia necessarily, Radio Shack has them, as well as Small Bear and all the usual places.

Thanks gez & Doug. The bezels I was using don't come apart (I know the ones with the bung, I use them for the infrared diode sensor in my optical theremin).
