Hello,

I'd finished a couple of days ago an Univox/Unicord Superfuzz using this layout: http://ustomp.com/files/superfuzzbuild.pdf.
I used BC549C with the gain between 500 and 600 because i didn't found any reference for it there.
It sounds crazy, but too harshed for my taste.
What transistors, or, maybe better, having what gains for it?

Thx a lot!

Look here http://members.fortunecity.com/uzzfay/home.html and you will see that nearly every different variant on the Superfuzz used transitors with fairly modest gain, usually hfe less than 300.

Thx a lot again Mark!

I think that i will change all with 2N3904 tomorrow!

Anyone has a striplayout or a PCB to do this superfuzz ? I searched on tonepad, fuzz central and GGG and I found nothing about it.

I've changed all transitors with 2N3904 and it sounds better now...not so harsh...but it's sure that's not my dream regarding distorsion :)
Thx Mark!

2N3904 can have fairly low hfe sometimes.  Although the circuit doesn't need high-hfe monsters like MPSA18 or 2N5089, you may want to make sure that they are at least in the 200+ range.

Gigimarga, sorry to drag up an ooooooooold post of yours, but I've just built this pedal using the same layout and I'm not getting any sound.  All components test ok and my pcb is intact, so I'm wondering if you found any errors in the ustomp layout? Any of the caps need way maybe? Cheers.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

remember, you have voltages from an original (solidhex) posted a bunch of times here, so you see what voltages you should get. you'll generally get lower C voltages with higher gain.

C B E
Q1 6.01 .66 .117
Q2 8.88 6.01 5.41
Q3 6.23 3.27 2.72
Q4 3.1 1.7 1.11
Q5 3.1 1.67 1.11
Q6 5.75 .98 .361

I scrapped some old (early 1970's) electronics a while ago and pulled a bunch of 2SC828's. The majority had gains from 83 to 110 and one was as high as 132.

also, remember that according to the Univox schematic, not all transistors were the same.

I agree with Lucifer - transistors ~100HFE are fine for this circuit.
