I figure someone may have already used one of course, so I'd figure I'd check here...

So I assume the shell includes everyting except the pinion gear.  Does the seperate pinion gear ($1.75) slip over the shaft of a standard pot?

I dont want to buy an expensive pot if i dont have to, because the design i am doing isnt a crybaby/vox style, and will work best with a normal pot.

You would assume wrong. :) It comes with it (well mine did). I used mine for a Kay Fuzztone and needed a 250K Lin pot. Ended up getting the 200K Black Top and put that in series with a 50K. Ideally I would have liked to minimize part count but couldn't easily find a pot that would fit the pinion.

You'll have to grind a flat part on the pot's shaft to attach the pinion gear... There's no guarantee the pot you're using will have a long enough threaded section to accommodate the washers and nut and still have room to attach to the wah shell. The rocktron tri wah uses this weird bracket to adapt a normal panel mounted alpha pot because of that reason. I'd only try to use a non-wah pot in a wah if I absolutely had to. Like in a Neovibe or any wah requiring a dual pot. Regular panel mounted pots have a very stiff feel in my opinion. Can't really get that fast wah action.

For someone in that same boat ( 250k wah pot needed ) you could get one of those 470k dunlop hot potz for the hendrix wah and put a 511k resistor in parallel will get you a 244k pot...

sounds like i better get a standard wah pot, even if it is pricey!

Well you could get a crybaby/vox off evilbay and gut it...
I saw some going for as low as 20 USD.

I think it's worth it - even if it's broken.
You can even reuse some parts like the pot (given you're not picky about it  :))

That's an awesome idea!!
