So my sister wanted to throw away some old Stereo EQ she had laying around...
well, thinking there might be something useful in there (inspired by earthtoneaudio's many posts about the subject),
I decided to pull it apart:

Guess what's inside, besides a ton of caps that could prove to be very useful?
6 JRC4558D's!  And a transformer still to be removed and measured.
Woot!
I'll have to do this more often.  It's fun, interesting, time-intensive, and a little bit money-saving!
By the way... anybody got info on the weird blue-coated caps?

Thanks!
~Andy

You'll save more than money by re-using old electronics, and that's a good thing. :) Who knows, you might even find some old germaniums from time to time.

which brings me to the question...
how to get to this stuff?

Those blue ones look like styrene plastic film caps.  Usually only available in small values.  They're fragile, be careful desoldering them.  The best thing about styrene caps is that the value doesn't vary much with age, temperature, humidity, etc... they're very stable.

eleanor296

thanks for the info, Ardric.
I guess the "general consensus" though is that they don't sound very "booteek" since I've never seen'em before?
I'll try'em out and report back!

Oh... also... I found this bag of transistors.
About 25 years old.  Most of'em I've never seen.
Here's a short list:
BSX29
a whole lot of "BC" ones, everything from 238B to 557E.
BF414
2SB22
2N2218
2SB186
2N2713

Anybody know if they would work as substitutions?
I figured I'd maybe include those in this thread instead of "wasting" it on a new one.
I haven't yet looked at data sheets for any of'em, didn't have time.
Just let me know if anything jumps out.
Had a nice batch of 555 timers in it as well, hehe.

Thanks!

Did you tear into it or try to debug it yet ?
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

well, I assumed it worked before I took it apart, didn't check though.
I'm just going to use it as a parts source.  The enclosure itself I had no use for and it's already in the trash.
Why are you asking?

~Andy

Jered

I think styrene caps sound great, use em.

Got cut by the police one time when searching materials for making puppets  ;D.  These guys are seerious.  :P

eleanor296

hah, Frank, that first article's awesome.
I'll look into it.
For anybody else interested, there's always
freecycle.org to check out.

Anybody got any info on the transistor list?

~Andy

eleanor296

score!
Got direct replacements for 2N3906, BC108,
and even some Ge transistors that are spec'd like AC128s!!!!!!

Wohoo!

Dude, my eyes got really wide (kinda like  :icon_eek:) when i saw those 4558s.  Wow.  Yeah, I took apart a radio and scored some caps and speakers, I'll definitely be doing that more often!

I remember not too long ago there was an FX-X where one of the requirements was to use as many recycled parts as possible.  I never saw how that one turned out...

*EDIT TO FIX GRAMMAR*

eleanor296

hmmm... I just tried cross-referencing the transistors that are in the board... but didn't get anything
thy're marked like this:
A750
IF11
or is it IFII or 1F11?
hmmmmmm....

eleanor296

nvm... found it... they're NTE234.

That's where I get all of my electronics! The music stores around here pitch a ton of useful stuff. I've rebuilt a few small practice amps and a 50watt power amp from stuff I've picked out of dumpsters. Eventually, when they found out that we were taking stuff, the stores left the stuff next to the dumpster. Then, when they found out who we where, they'd just let us know what they were planning on throwing out when we'd go into the store. My friend has two 20" black widows that just needed replacement cones. Things that just need repair, for most people, doesn't make something worth keeping it.

Get to know the people at your local second hand music shop. And even if they hate you, their dumpsters are usually really clean. :p

ive got quite a few salvaged electronics in my garage
any time any electronics device breaks, i tear it apart, and salvage some parts
the vcr i took apart was a gold mine
10000uf 10v caps, a few different colour leds, VARIOUS types of diodes (some ive never seen)
even a single WIMA cap was in there
just recently i torn apart a playstation, found some good stuff

to get stuff, garage sales, yard sales, relatives and friends (tell them to send there broken/unwanted stuff to you) dumpsters, trash day is damn good (you know, when people leave random crap in a pile out the front for trucks to pick up) pretty much things like that

The new playstations have blue lasers in them  8) and quite powerful ones too. Good things await in the future.

darron

hey.. why did you cut the wires so short? you'd definitely need wires in anything you build (:
Blood, Sweat & Flux. Pedals made with lasers and real wires!

eleanor296

Darron:  I already salvaged all the wire I could.
That's why its mostly so short.  I did that while I was tearing it apart.
The white wires though weren't long to begin with, so I cut'em in the middle.
