Boutique distortion question/issue

I successfully breadboarded the Box of Rock from my schematic.  However, now that it is on vero I'm getting a terrible sound.  It sounds like a crunchy terrible fuzz, almost like the distortion is overcooked or something.  It's all broken up and chunky.  Also, another odd thing, when I take the volume three lead off of the pot, I'm still getting a smalll amount of signal through to the amp.  When I unplug ground from volume one, this gets louder..!? Does this mean that something is bleeding to ground ?
