Separating + and - halves of signal?

I've been having some ideas for a design I wanted to try out. However, in order to figure out how to go forward with it, I need to know how to manipulate each side of the signal separately (the positive and the negative swings). The most obvious approach would be to use diodes, but that would probably create some crossover distortion (because of the forward voltage of the diodes).

How else could I achieve this?
