Any ideas about how to produce the guitar sound in this tune that starts at about 56 seconds in?  Sounds like he's got some filter/resonance in there, not sure though.

sounds like it is doubled (tripled, quadrupled?) with sort of synthy sounds. There's a bass note (octaver?), there's a sort of "DI" sounding fuzz (plug in a tape recorder with no amp or amp simulator), there's a fuzzy amp tone somewhere in there. Tons of super-fast compression (and a noise gate).

There does sound like there are some filters involved too. Possibly a bunch of filters used like crossovers to compress and fuzz out different frequency ranges. (Multiband compressor/crossover?)

The fuzz sounds a little synthy too. Something like an Uglyface with the threshold off and the sensitivity off so there's no filter sweep.

It sounds like "studio magic" to me, so you might have a hard time getting this exact tone with pedals, but the above ideas are a start.

when I first heard it I thought " hmmmm ... wonder if that's an uglyface."

Seeing how it took 15 years to produce this sound I would say that it is probably something much more involved than a simple guitar into a couple pedals.  I'd put some stock into Rodgre's line of thinking.

It took 15 years to find a way for Axle's voice to completely carry a song?

Ton's of studio Magic, and 15 years later. I think it sounds like A**. Course that is just me, i prefer a more natural sounding (analog anyway) Guitar, and axl is using similiar tricks to avoid people knowing that he can't sing anymore! It all sounds Fake

Axl isn't trying to mask the fact that he can't sing anymore. He just doesn't want us to know he's lost all his hair.

Actually, to me the song seems kind of lackluster.  Big production masking a lack of creativity.  The sound of the guitars, however, is a different story.  The muted picking around 52s sounds great, and the synthy power chords are cool.  I agree it's not natural, and I really love the natural sound of a cranked amp, but there's room for experimentation and different sounds too, isn't there?

In reading these responses, it seems like it would be easier to reproduce this in Cubase or Protools than with pedals :(  I'll try the ugly face with some EQ and filter and see how close I get.

Don't know how to get the sound.

Solo / lead fills are excellent though - nice and choppy.

15 years to produce music that, let's face it, isn't as groundbreaking as, say, Sgt. Peppers, Pet Sounds, Passion and Warfare, Hell Awaits, or anything Hendrix / Eddie Kramer came up with is a bit rich though.

Still, GnR / the Axl Circus should be grateful - most bands' careers don't last 15 years, let alone still have an audience after a decade and a half's quest for perfection.

Fair play though, they stuck at it...

Let's just see if they can play it live...   :icon_redface:
