New Boss power supply makes noise

Have you guys seen the NEW boss PSA-120S?
I picked one up and noticed that they've changed to a switching design that includes some kinds in-line filter box near the 2.1 barrel plug.
I opened up the in-line part and there are two coil like things (inductors?).

So I'm like Cool, they've upgraded it!
I get home and it whines with almost all my diy pedals.  :icon_sad: :icon_rolleyes: :icon_evil:
I also tried using it with just one pedal at a time and it whines the same as in a daisy chain.
Works OK with my Boss pedals.

I've been using an older linear PSA-120 and a new 1-Spot without problems with a daisy chain DC cable, so it's a little surprising.
Anyone else run into problems with the new PSA-120S?

I'm thinking of cutting off the in-line filter box to see if that helps, but maybe I should just return it.

Now I'm kicking my self for not getting two 1-spots while I was last in the states.
For some reason, the major music stores here carry some VS pedals but not the 1-Spot.
They sell the Goldyike version here, you know, the one that came out after a NAMM show when they had their booth next door to VS's (yes I'm stirring that pot).

It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.

ayayay!

Two coil like things?  Like toroidal transformers?  Or maybe those coils are like ferrite beads?  Dunno, pics?

Here ya go for reference but I think I'll just take it back.
I guess there's a PSU project in my near future.

Anyway it would be nice to know if anyone else is using these to daisy chain a bunch of pedals.

Better keep that old PSA-120 working.

Here a great thread on repairing broken boss adapters
I've done this and it works.

That thing exposed with the toroids is a RF filter, trying to stop the high frequency hash getting down the line.
As you have found, either it doesn't work, or else it has added enough series impedance to the 9V line to cause problems with your box.
Try putting a humongous cap across the 9v line on the stompbox side & see if it helps any.

We'll be seeing a LOT more of this crap, now that linear warts are illegal in many places. Yeah, it's OK to use air conditioners, but don't use a linear power supply, that's a waste of energy :icon_rolleyes:

Does this similar to this filtering concept? I'm not sure, I think your's a choke (two) isn't. Anyone...?
I got many of this inductor(choke) from the scrap computer power supply and i'm thinking of using this to my DIY pedal Power supply to enhance more of filtering if this would help. As quoted in the link "The extra filtering keeps the circuit clean and hum-free." if I'm getting it right.    ::)

R.G. ?
You rang?

It is ...very... difficult to remove noise with an external filter like that.

Such filtering can only remove differential mode noise, between the two DC power lines. It cannot remove common mode noise between BOTH lines and AC ground to any satisfactory degree. The answer is more often inside the power supply enclosure, not out on the DC power lines from what I've seen. Getting a quiet 9V switcher for effects is not a simple design task. But I really don't know what's inside the Boss box.

On a lighter note, I notice they have chosen to flatter us with their choice of enclosures.  :icon_biggrin:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I don't know if my input is late or not, but I wanted to say that I too have tried using the new PSA-120 and it does make a squealing noise. I would probably have brought it back, but it was mainly bought to run my Micro BR. I have a Power supply I built back in 1990 when I was at college. This works great but is bulky.

Has anyone had good luck with the ONE spot? I have been considering buying one as a back up.

Thanks,
Al

Yes the 1 spots work great as does the old PSA-120s.

When will L&M start selling the 1 spots in Canada (western canada that is) R.G.?

So you go get the Visual Sound product, right ?

no, I prefer  the 60Hz hum!
