Hi all!!
Remember the DUI distortion i posted a few days ago?
well, i built it, with some minor improvements like a better tone control, and some switches here and there..and voilá.. the TEXAS BROWNIE was born:

i absolutely love it..it has a very brown overdrive and rolling back the gain it turns a very responsive transparent overdrive..

an audio clip to hear it for yourselves:
this is a demo of it´s versatility, i play and tweak the controls..there´s a sound spike at some point..it was the boost function..i set that pretty loud, sorry:

Texas Brownie... for some reason the first thing that popped into my head was "armadillo as roadkill."

Just seems like you could call that a "Texas Brownie" also.

*note: I actually like animals, and would be sad to see one meet its end like that.  Don't know why I had such a morbid thought.   :icon_eek:

newfish

Wow!

That's almost every fuzz / drive you'll ever need, right?   :icon_lol:

As always, excellent playing too.

Congrats.
Happiness is a warm etchant bath.

ahha yes..versatility is one of my designing goals every time..

about the name.. i think it´s ptretty explicative isnt´it?

Looks and sounds great!

Really sounds versatile- I like that! :icon_wink:

Paul Marossy

Wow, you can get a lot of different sounds with that! Nice chops, too.  :icon_razz:

Daniel, are the rightmost switch settings labeled "baked" and "raw"?  If so, I am ROTFLMAO!   :icon_mrgreen: :icon_lol: ::)

dschwartz

ahah yeah, the switch say baked/raw..it´s a gain switch..i called it like that cause i didnt know what to put there, so it´s pretty abstract hehe..
the other switch is creamy/lo fat  that controls the bass filter in the first stage

it´s basically a DUI distortion..
here:
http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=71961.0

just take note of these corrections:
- feedback clipping leds are connected to the center of the gain pot, not to the outer lug
- opamp feedback cap up to 200pF
- Source resistor of the first u-amp is 10K (5,2K is too much gain)
- i used the AMZ big muff tone with 2 pots (check this out on AMZ´s page) it works great!!
- add a 100pF cap to ground at the input to avoid oscilations

and that´s it..

Wow, certainly versatile. I really like your playing too :)

Very good tones! I may be special, but I couldn't see the tone stuff you mentioned at AMZ. Is it something they sell? ???

Also, can you specify how you added the switches? I'm trying to wrap my brain around distortion circuits, and the details really help.

dschwartz

here is the dual tone control from AMZ:
http://www.muzique.com/lab/atone.htm

the gain switch takes the signal from the first u-amp stage or the second..thats it
the other switch changes the cap to ground from the opamp´s feedback (bigger= more bass)

i rather not to give you the exact values and let YOU decide them to your taste..

Am I safe to assume you used the second half of the opamp as the boost stage after the overdrive section?

dschwartz

no..i used a TL081..the boost is just another volume control..this pedal has like 15-20dB of output, so a boost stage after it is unnecessary.

Thanks for the extra info. I'm less interested in the cap values than in the topology (where you
added the switches). This is a seriously great sounding box! Did you breadboard the whole
thing first?
