Here's what i use:



It has flexibility- i can test stuff clean or distorted, there's a pre out/power in for testing how effects react in an FX loop, and i can hook the amp up to a 2x12 cab i have to hear what stuff sounds like on a real cab.  Plus it's small so it fits right on the bench.  I think these features are essential.

I would scan pawn shops or check at music stores for broken amps you might be able to score for cheap.
