I was finding the inability to zoom in on my working limiting. When trying to work with items that were close together I kept selecting the wrong component or trace.  Then I remembered that in System Preferences Pane there is a "Universal Access" setting. It has various settings for people with hearing and vision impairments to allow them to use their computer. Hitting option-command-8 at the same time zooms in on your work, hit them again to zoom out.

The default setting for the way to mouse works while zoomed was annoying but if you go into "Universal Access" in system preferences and hit the clicking the "option" button by the zoom settings it allows you to change  "When zoomed in, the screen image moves: continuouly with pointer" to "only when the pointer reaches an edge".

Works for me, hope that makes some sense

In 10.5.x you can hold the Control key while scrolling the mouse wheel to zoom the screen in and out.

Oh yeah, the scroll ball of  my "mighty mouse" crapped out pretty early on so I forgot about that.

I can't stand the latest Apple keyboard and mouse designs. They're the complete opposite of ergonomic if you ask me. I switched recently to a Logitech S530 keyboard+mouse combo and I'm a much happier Mac user with that setup.
