Well maybe I'll buy a can tomorrow and see what it can do!

this entrigued me so I thought I would try it with some fresh really fizzy coke.

I left a small piece of copper vero in a makeshift etching tray and filled it.

Left it for about an hour, it cleaned the dirt off the board (as I expected) but no etching took place, about 3 hours later still the same but the coke wasn't as fizzy, and I checked again there now so im pretty sure theres not a notciable amount of etching going on, although it would be a good idea to use it as an enclosure or PCB cleaner?

If a whole board were to be etched it would likely take forever, along with many changes of the cola..

I think its handier to stick with FeCl :)

GREEN FUZ

As an experiment I snorted 30 Litres of it and I haven`t slept in 3 days.

...I once left a piece of PCB with the word 'TEST' in a container of Coca Cola for 2 weeks.

The Cola cleaned the board, then evaporated to leave a sticky mess.

FeCl or similar is the way forwards.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Cola_formula

"To this day, Coca-Cola uses as an ingredient from coca leaf extract prepared by a Stepan Company plant in Maywood, New Jersey, using a process monitored by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Because cocaine is naturally present in coca leaves, today's Coca-Cola uses "spent", or treated, coca leaves, those that have been through a cocaine extraction process, to flavor the beverage. Some contend that this process cannot extract all of the cocaine alkaloids at a molecular level, and so the drink still contains trace amounts of the stimulant. The Coca-Cola Company currently refuses to comment on the continued presence of coca leaf in Coca-Cola."

I used to have a diet coke habit - then for financial reasons, had to go cold turkey.
Strangely enough, the persistent headaches that had been plaguing me, disappeared, never to return.

So far as for etching with diet coke, you would have to add some hydrogen peroxide I expect. Phosphoric acid by itself isn't going to dissolve copper, but it can make it shiny by dissolving any oxide on the surface.

It's been proven that Aspartane puts holes in your brain, amongst other problems associated with drinking diet colas. I've given them up completely myself, instead switching to Sprite and similar types.

It's a bit of a stretch to say that the cessation of your Diet Coke habit and your headaches going away implies any sort of causal relationship.  That is why anecdotal evidence is not part of the scientific method.  Also, the article cited by all the ban aspartame as evil incarnate websites, was a 30 yr. old study showing that in rats, aspartic acid, one component of aspartame, could lead to brain cell death and subsequent holes in brain tissue.  I'm not an advocate of aspartame in the least, but I am an advocate of good science.  Now if you've got something we can add to Coke to make it etch boards effectively throw it out there, and we'll do some controlled tests.

I agree, but I must say that caffeine withdrawal has been recognised by mainstream medicine as a common headache cause for more than 50 years.
See for example http://www.headachenech.com/faq/

I don't personally believe any of the negative things some say about aspartamine. But caffeine rebound headache is not just "in my mind" (though it WAS 'in my head" at the time!)

Tantalum7

True.  Caffeine withdrawal causing headaches is demonstrable and repeatable--nothing quite like it for that all over cranial throbbing.  I wasn't trying to imply that.  It's harder to tell what the effects of Aspartame are or who the unusually sensitive people are to it.  Personally, I think that if Aspartame had been worthy of all of the worst things said about it, there would have been more cases of related problems found over the last 30 years.  The only things that are really safe to say are that drinking anything to excess is probably bad for you, and that A happening then B happening doesn't necessarily imply that A caused B without further testing.  I wasn't trying to offend anyone's sensibilities.

biggy boy

I don't drink much pop (soda) anymore, too sweet for me.
But I do like to have a Brio Chinotto every once and a while. It's got more kick then Coke.
Not sure if it would etch. I would to be expensive for me to try, plus I'd want to drink it :icon_biggrin:

newfish

...and what's with the 'sweeteners in everything' deal?

OK - so you want to lose some weight - buy 'Diet' drinks and the like.

For the rest of us whose age in years exceeds our waistline in inches, we *like* drinking sugar-flavoured sugar drinks.  With extra sugar in.

Artificial Sweeteners are even present in toothpaste.

...I also think that the argument about Aspartame killing brain cells etc is moot - I mean, who ever drank Cola without Whisky in it....?

...or Rum.  Cuba Libre por favor!

Anyway - I'll quit my yappin' and get on with the show...
