Anyone have the schematic for the Colorsound Overdriver/Power Boost with the BC109 transistors?

All the links are broken (this site included) or are using the BC169 or BC184 trannys. I want the BC109's as I hear they have a different sound that I'm after and a few altered parts. Anybody have one saved on their computer or know it's secret hiding place?

All the search got me was dead links  :'(

Thanks  :)

I've only ever seen one original schematic.  This one: http://www.schematicx.com/schematic/colorsound-overdriver-effect-pedal-schematic/

I've tried, 109's, 184L's and C's, 169B's, 5088's and 3904's and they all sound pretty much the same in this circuit. Also, the original BC109's used in the Power Boost and Overdriver were the type in a plastic case, not metal like some claim.

If you're not doing it for yourself, it's not DIY. ;)

Sorry for the bump, but I'm having some trouble reading a few values on the original schematic.

1) The electro right before (what looks like) the tone stack. It looks like it says 64uF, but based of other schematics, this cap should be lower, like 6.4uF?

2) The cap over the bass control, looks like it says 0.1?

3) The pots, are the all linear? Doesn't seem to be any markings anywhere.

Hopefully some of you guys who built this could remember or take a peak to see what's the deal.

Thanks!!!  :)  :D

I've built 3 or 4 of Colorsound Overdrive and i have some photos of an original reissue one, so the answers are:

1) The cap is 6.4uF, but 4.7uF or 10uF are OK too

2) Yes, the cap is 0.1uF (http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/Caseys-Vintage-Effect-Page/album34/colorsound_od.jpg.html)

3) The tone pots are 100K lin, the gain is 10K reversed log and the volume is 100K log.

Also, where on earth am I supposed to find 25uF electro caps? 25v would be nice, but all there is is 22uF and 33uF  ???

I guess 22uF can do...

ONE MORE!

BC109 or BC109C  ???

1. 22uF or 33uF are very good (the reissue use some 33uF)...anyway, if you want to be closer to 25uF you can use a 22uF in parallel with a 3.3uF

2. I've built them using BC109C, BC549C, BC550, BC413 and all sounded very well (for my ear, of course)...so, again, doesn't matter very much (the reissue have BC184L...)

Thx mth5044! I'm glad to help youe because that was my first DIY build after 15 years of pause  ::)

High gain NPN's will sound heavier! that's some kind of kick to your head! I love this thing... also you could try some Ge PNP's, twisting electro caps... and if you try mosfets instead of NPN's, you'll get AC DC!

Also replace the 6.8k/ 22uF cap with 10k pot for a 5k pot with lug 3 to Q1 emitter, lug 1 to grund, and lug 2 to a 22uF cap, and the (-) of the electro to ground, better control, I think. I've done it that way!

Yes, that's the schematic I scanned long ago. I built it. It works.

3) The tone pots are 100K lin, the gain is 10K reversed log and the volume is 100K log.

Are you sure the gain is 10K reversed log?

No, the gain pot have many values (2.2K, 4.7K, 10K) and it is lin, log or rev log. As this overdrive it's a clean booster until at 80% of the gain pot and an overdriver after this point, i preferred a rev log pot to control the gain better (the sweet spot between clean and overdrive). When i used a lin pot i got the overdrive sound in the last 10-15 degrees of the pot, that made it almost unusable.

Anyway, I've uploaded the photos of the reissue Colorsound Overdrive, and, as you can see, the values of the pots are different:

It certainly appears that the gain on this pedal is a Log pot according to this photo -

http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/Schematics-etc/DSCN4358.jpg.html

Since these pots were made in the U.K., I wonder if the "B" after "Log" would mean reverse audio?

mth5044

This is going to sound quite stupid, but why are there for transistors in the pictures in the posts above? ^

The schematic only shows three  ???

I have no ideea  :icon_frown:...for my taste the log rev was the best.
