Okay, doing the tonepad layout.  Checked for solder bridges, IC orientation, etc. etc.  Audio probed and the problem is that the signal is disappearing after going through the first cap (.05u).  There is nothing there and I can't figure out what is happening.  There has to be a short somewhere, but I can't find it.  Any ideas?  Anyone have a similar problem?

I found out that the first cap was dead, so I replaced it.  Now my issues are thus:
1) I hear the ticking and kind of a background hiss, but with the filter/S&H switch in one position, it sounds like there is some bad clipping and it is very boomy and the controls don't do anything.  The up/down switch does nothing here.
2) With the switch in the other position, the up/down switch does something.  In one mode (up or down), it is about the same as in the other mode, but in the other mode, I only barely hear a very nasty clipped sound (like a poorly biased jfet).

I also have voltages, if those are needed.  I know this doesn't seem like much information, but for all of you who have built it, I could really use some help or some thoughts.  I tried audio probing, but I don't understand what the circuit is supposed to be doing, so I don't know if what I am hearing at certain points is what I should be hearing.
