Anyone have some good Vox Wah mods?  I recently got a really good deal on a basically brand new Vox wah.  Looking for some mods...

Yo

I'd suggest plugging your wah in, deciding if you like the way it sounds. If it has any shortcomings decide what they are and figure out if they can be addressed by a mod. There's plenty of qualities to a wah that can be changed by tweaking resistor values.

I would highly recommend the sweep capacitor selector. with values like .0068, .01, and .015 or something like that.

What capacitors do you replace?  And in general Id say that Id like it to be more vocal, just less harsh.  Its too trebely.

Check out the DIYresources section of http://www.wah-wah.co.uk/index.html

they've got a lot of great info on mods to the circuit, what starting values to be used, and ranges.

on my Vox wah i've done many mods, inspiered by personal taste and EH, RMC and Colorsound wah schems.
now it look like this:

removing the res in parellel with the inductor and putting a jumper on the between +9V and the collector of Q2 ala colorsound, made it sounds really a lot more vocal !! :P

Upon further spelunking it appears as though there may be a lot of surface mounts in mine.  Has anyone seen this in a newer Vox?  Theres very few components on the top of the board so i figure there must be a bunch of those little bastards on the back side

I picked up a Vox Wah about a year ago (brand new) and it has all the usual components ("normal" sized stuff). Hmm.

Oh yeah! About the mods... the best thing I've done to it so far was to adjust the pot gear thingy to make it less high endy and more bass/mid. This simply changes the section of the pot's sweep that's used (it did go from mids to very high end, now it goes from upper bass to lower high end). Hope this helps.

Mine has several normal caps and other components on top, but it only has one resistor which leads me to believe there are SMDs on the back side

Joe Hart

I found a video on YouTube that shows the SMD board. Wow! I would be pissed if I opened a Wah and found those!! You know, from a modder's standpoint!! Maybe you should just take the inductor and build a new board with any mods you may want.

Yea, its slightly dissapointing

if you really want to go mod it, it's simple enough to get a wah circuit board. GGG  and this forum's own John Lyons  (among others) sell them. I have been very pleased with the boards I have gotten from both.

bassplaya12

Are they modeled after any particular wah?  And also how pricey does it start to get when you completely populate a wah board?

Hanglow

The most expensive parts of a wah are the pot and the inductor  -as you allready have these, it's very cheap. Other than the pcb, the most expensive thing you would buy would be a rotary switch for the sweep caps. if you want a new inductor, lots of people like the whipple which you can find on ebay.

you can build the ggg board to any spec you want, most of the classic wahs are essentially the same circuit with just some different values

bassplaya12

Thanks.  I may look into this!

Just curiously anyone interested in buying my Vox wah?

tehfunk

I'm sorry but that's at least a little bit funny.

dude, give it a try. you wanted to mod this wah even before you got it and tested. go buy a wah-wah shell and make your own wah. try both and if after a long test you don't like the vox, sell it on ebay.
If I was God you'd sell your soul to...

No i was just planning on modding it if it was gonna be relatively easy, just swap out a couple values.  I dont really need a wah.
