Looking into doing some external switching with relays. This requires two SPST switches, four mono jacks and two cables normally. I don't want to use two mono jacks and have two cables running to my external switching box though, that's just getting messy!

So I figured I would use a either a XLR or DIN plug/cable...

My question is though, on these plugs is one pin a ground pin?

Also which do you think would be better to use? I guess its more of a question as to which is more readily available and which is will last longer.

Also where does one buy XLR/DIN cable?

Thanks...

What kind of switching are you doing?  If it takes two mono, jacks, could you not get away with a trs jack?  It has the same number of conductors as a normal xlr.  You could do a 4 pin xlr.  I would go with xlr, personally, if you need 4 or more conductors.  As for ground, if you are doing the wiring, you control which pin is which.  If you are talking standard xlr, then yes, one pin is ground, I think pin 2 but I am not positive (been a long time since I worked with those much).

I just checked your post again, did you mean you don't want two stereo jacks?  If that is the case, I would go with xlr, they are sturdy and you can get locking jacks.

Yup, I've done this route via ethercon.

Me too - that's how I did a fair few multi-channel remote bypass loop switch doodads. I made myself a little drilling template - used a punch for the big hole in the middle, then drilled the two outers.

Greenlee reportedly used to do a punch that'd do the central hole and the locators in one but no more. Alas.
