runoffgroove's Double D as a preamp

Hello all,

Fairly simple question: I like the sound of this circuit and was thinking of making a preamp out of it:

http://www.runoffgroove.com/doubled.html

In the article, they suggested adding in "your favorite tone stack" for this purpose, which I'd like to do. However, where would be the best place to PUT said tone stack for each channel? Between the inverters and the output volume pots, or somewhere in between the inverter stages? I've seen the simple "treble-cut" tone controls placed after the inverters, but I wasn't sure it would be the same case for a traditional B/M/T stack due to insertion loss or other factors.

Regardless, thanks for any and all input.

Usually the best place to put it is just before the volume control, however, you could mod it so that both channels share the tonestack.  Depending on the tonestack and the output impedance of the inverters, you may want to do like a source follower or something to allow the signal to drive the stack harder.  I don't know that it is necessary because I'm not too familiar with the 4049's characteristics (though I do have the double d and really like some of the sounds it gets, first build).

I put a BMP style tone control between the cap and volume pot.

I'll check this out when I breadboard it, preliminary simulations with Duncan's TSC look promising.

I thought of that, however I'm using this as an honest-to-God preamp; the output is going into a straight up power amplifier with no controls at all, so I figured I would want a full tone stack to replicate that of a guitar amplifier. I definitely at least want separate control of bass and treble.

Will keep working on it and post when I have some results. Thanks for your input!
