I built the ROG Tube Reamer

and ran into a problem with the gain pot. I like the way this circuit sounds, and I don't have anything more than a moderate overdrive on my board right now as far as non-fuzz distortions go, so it will get a lot of use. Anyway, the pot has an unacceptably small range, there is a small change between 8 and 10, but besides that, almost no effect. I bypassed the gain pot and found that the volume knob on my guitar (also a 500kA) does exactly what I want the gain pot on the pedal to do. Great range and precise control. Why won't the one on the pedal do this? I think I'll just put a 500kA pot before the input of the circuit and use that as a gain control, but I want to know if I did something wrong, or why it wouldn't work.

Recheck your build.  There is a wider range of gain in a properly working build than what you are reporting.

Well, I just wired the 500kA pot before the input and it works great. Already boxed up on on my board. Not sure what I did wrong but what I did right sounds good and works well.

try 500k Linear or "B" for gain.
