I'm looking for NPN Si trannies with Hfe typically ranging from 50-150.  Anybody have any suggestions?

2n5133 from smallbear

Aren't the 2n4401 pretty low gain too?

SonicVI

I have some 2N5133's and indeed some are really low gain but the ones I got were a mixed bag.   I'm looking for something more consistently low gain.

PN2369A ... I have a batch that are all about 70

2n3903 ... batches in the 130's

silicon power trannies are low hfe... but of course, theyre big TO-220 packed.
Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar.  If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.

And if you're in the EU region, BC... transistors come in three different Hfe grades, A, B, C.
"A" is the grade with the lowest Hfe's, and on some types in the region of 100-150, according to the datasheet anyway, I wonder how actual devices perform.

+1 for piggybacking.  There's some magic in there as well as low hFE.

Actually, many come in smaller packages.  The BD139 is tiny (hFE around 150) and the TIPs and MJE3055 come in TO-220s (hFEs of 50 to 150.  High capacitance, too, like in the old days.)

I bought a bunch of Si transistors when I was developing my fuzz...
the 2N2369 I had were Extremely low gain (Hfe 33 + 35), and sounded pretty bad in a fuzz face circuit.  They got really thin and weak as soon as you rolled back your guitar's volume.
I had some 2N2222.  Gain ranged from 120-160.
In the end I used 2N3904, as the ones I got had gains of 110-120.  (Added some other little tricks to lower their gain as well.)  I've heard people complain that 2N3904 usually have higher gain than that, so maybe I just got lucky with the ones I had.

We have the BC... a,b,c here in Canada too.
