Well certainly the contemporary guitar synth, which you allude to, is the optimum way to go.  But for those who either lack the needed technology, or simply wish to sidestep the need to master MIDI and a wad of extra equipment, the Morley approach is the way to go.  I might point out that guitar synths, even with fibre-optics at the bridge, still have the task of discerning a mere finger gliss on a wound string from a light pick.  The direct contact approach Rick describes directly differentiates between intended and unintended signals.  Certainly not as flexible as a hex pickup and synth, but every bit as explicit as a key-press with - as they like to say in commercials - "no fuss, no muss".

Yes, it's the ability to consistantly detect a note on that appeals to me. The circuit works by either fading an LED on or off,depending on the particular variation. One or more LDRs are controlled by the LED. The potential to sync an event to the note on is what I like.

Remember old organs that had a switch that would add a high hat sound to every bass pedal note? Wouldn't it be cool to add that type of sound to every note you picked? All you'd have to do is use the LDR to add a burst of noise to each picked note.

Each note on could duck pre=recorded tracks that would fade back in at a preset rate. Distortion level could be faded up or down with each note on, speed, intensity or wave shape of phasing, flanging, tremolo could change, and so on.

I really have to try some of these things.

the volume pedal method is harder because it's not a consistently timed swell and you can't create the same wall of sound without any cutoff.  also, it's hard to keep it going and sing.  someone told me on a post here that the DL4 only is able to do what it does because it's all digital. 

what would a tap swell do?  that sounds interesting...

anybody know how this operates??  i found it on google images and if its a slow gear-like swell, i would like to take a shot at it 8)

Is there anybod who have tried it yet.
I have struggled with the Slow gear without getting a good result. I even hunted down the odd FET. And yes it works bot not as good as it should and in a very tiny range. SG is the only one I have tossed in my towel on from about 60 builds. so if this works....

The only bad sounding stomp box is an unbuilt stomp box. ;-)

I just breadboarded the Anthony Leo Fuzz from the original Popular Electronics Magazine. There are three caps listed in the B.O.M but only two in the schematic. I left out the output cap as R.G said, used 2n3904 trannies and ran a Big Muff into it. It wasn't swelling so I checked the Justin Philpott schemo, and it's different from the Magazine version. I moved the "swell" pot to the collector and emitter of the first tranny and it was doing a little swelling on the lower notes when the Muff was cranked. Nothing on the higher notes though.

Then I plugged an Ampeg Scrambler into the Swell Circuit. Bingo! It works almost exactly like the Prescription Electronics Experience but only when the Texture Knob is all the way toward the Octave setting and the blend is all effect.

Really efficient little device !

I read somewhere (in this forum I think) that this swell pedal doesn't work well with solid state amp - and may damage some.
However is it possible to use it for recording through a POD or else without any trouble?

I have no idea. R.G said "The Output of the swell section is DC coupled to the output jack, not separated by a capacitor to block DC. The pedal normally sits at a DC level that pulls the input of a follow-up amp or effect into a non-conducting condition, so no signal gets through. When signal hits the output, the DC conditions change so the amp gradually starts passing signal."
Even when running the swell effect into a delay, then into the amp, the effect is still there. Maybe it has more to do with the amp than the effects used afterward.

I'm trying to splice this into another fuzz pedal and can't figure out how to get it to only work when the fuzz is on.

I'v started to bread board this one and its strucks me that If i read the shematics correctly there is nothing from the audio path that connects the LED controll part of the circut with the Audio part and can fire it off. Unless the there shuld be a connection junction with tha anode side of the LED on the LDR/LDR combo and the 18K resistir and the lines not are meant to "jump" over???

I don't understand the part of the metal pick.

the metal pick is conductive and is connected somehow to the device

when it touches the strings it connects to ground and that continuity is used somehow to trigger the swell

this is done as opposed to the swell being triggered by a particular signal amplitude


at least this is what I gather from it ... I've never seen or used one of these devices

Now I see. (did not watch the whole video until now) brilliant. Use a metal pick connected to SW1 instead of a momentary (and hard to sync with your feet's) switch.
Weird design from DOD. I thought it worked like the BOSS Slow gear at first.
