The Analog Devices site shows an interesting assortment of high-efficiency portable amp chips: http://www.analog.com/en/amplifiers-and-comparators/audio-amplifiers/products/index.html

Some things that might be worth loooking at.  Many are SMD, but we can manage that.  Perhaps most important, many of these 1-3W devices have nearly 90% efficiency.

I will also note that they show the SSM2167 in SMD form as essentially a replacement for the SSM2166, and for a cheaper price too.

Human customers may want to avoid the 1.4mm2 9-ball wafer package.  Makes TSSOP's look positively titanic.

Interesting 1 watts in Elektor magazine too, no hard to find components. It is not perfect but anyway

Errm, expensive, hard to work with and not that powerful. many of these are made to be controlled by a microprocessor or microcontrollers via digital controls, maybe you're into that, maybe not.

I'd suggest LM384, LM3886, TDA20xx chips instead, if you're just looking for a simple chip-amp with some power, those are simple to use and there are loads of designs available on the internet.
