I need to buy a 41256 DRAM chip. ZIP package would be much better. Is this chip sold anyware (in this package)?
If not, do DIP -> ZIP adaptors exist?
I'm willing to "design" a daughter board for a DIP chip, wired to the main pcb. But if those adaptors do exist, the better.

Do you have any IDEA just how many older video cards with that precise DRAM in sockets by the meg-ful are sitting in discarded computers at the end of driveways right now at this moment?  Dumpster-dive my friend.

DWBH

Yes I do. But there aren't much discarded computers on our dumps. More like thrashed cars and washing machines. No PCs.

Try a PC recycling store. You can probably score an old PCI-based video card with the memory you need for ~$5. Or buy from an arcade machine repair shop: http://www.arcadecomponents.com/catalog/item/2251646/1691242.htm

As for the ZIP socket -- umm, what are you using? All the ZIP sockets I've used are designed to take DIP packages with 2.54 mm lead spacing. When I say ZIP socket I mean something like this:

Is that what you mean?

"short-lived is" is apt. Look at the products those were found in (Amigas) -- can you find one of those in a salvage store?

Can you not redesign for DIP? You're using obsolete and short-lived which translates to "hard to find and hella expensive". :) I seriously doubt there a DIP chip adapters for that form factor.

It's for an Ibanez delay. I'll probably do a daughter conversion board. Until I start dumpster-diving I'll keep looking for ZIP chips :P

No, I'm talking about Zig-zag in-line package (ZIP)

Hi everyone,

I found the forums by searching for my website name. I have the ZIP packaged 44256 DRAM chips, but I don't have them listed on the website. I'll have them listed next weekend when I update inventory on the website.

Feel free to drop me a note if you are looking for old chips and I don't have them listed on the site.

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure that is a ZIFF socket.

Yep. Zero insertion force.
