Does a photocell require power to work?

I have a scrambler and i want to add a photo lens expression to one of the knobs...much like a peep exp pedal. can i go: photocell>spst>pot lugs, or do i need some sort of circuit in there? thanks

Nope.  Light varies the resistance whether anything is connected or not.  But if it's not connected to anything, how do you know...?  A tree falls in the woods...
