so ive tried most of the super buzzy fuzz circuits floating around these parts, and some did it pretty well, others not so much.
this is what ive come up with and settled on for my self, if you're into this type of thing give it a whirl!
just a single volume control on this one, on my personal unit its a trimmer on the board.

I wouldn't mind giving this a go.. looks good. Have any sound clips?

doug deeper

no clips, it sounds like a bee.
;D

GREEN FUZ

Fat ol` Bumble or busy, busy honey type?

Dragonfly

Basically an FY-2 without a tone scoop

That'll definitely "buzz", and in a good way !

the real secret is in the 4.7k resistor, super high pass!
the blend is fixed in the "best" spot.
and the pn2222 are kind of important too as they seem to clip a lot differently then most similar transistors.

I like the Pn2222's a lot as well. I also like the plastic case 2N2222 (even better than the metal can ones).

i messed around with the FY-2 sans scoop as per your suggestion before, doug.  it is very cool!.  i think i used it as a jumping off point when i was trying to nail the spirit in the sky tone.  i remember getting pretty close.  i'll have to get back to that one of these days! not to mention giving this a try...

Derringer

are there any good clips available of the FY-2 or do I need to build one to hear it ?

It demonstrates, in clumsy fashion, the difference, i both tone and volume, between the fuzz with the scoop and with the scoop drastically attenuated.

Thanks Mark!

wow ... really does sound like a bee!

doug deeper

this one is even buzzier!
give it a whirl.
;)

If it sounds anything like that sound sample, I am going to give it a try.

I built the "os mutantes fuzz" hoping it would sound something like this, but it ended up sounding different (though good in its own way). It is close in some respects, but that supper thin/buzzy bee sound is what I was looking for.

Mark Hammer

If you push the FY-2 circuit with a boosted input signal, it gets sicker still.  Personally, I'm fnding that I like the unscooped mushy sound.

Note that the "bee-buzz" is largely a byproduct of the post-fuzz toneshaping.  The midscoop carves out the mids, leaving principally the highs and very lows.  Replacing the .001uf treble bypass cap in the midscoop filter with a larger value will let more of the upper mids through for a gnarlier tone.  And of course, anything that filters out less of the signal will necessarily result in greater maximum output level.

Instead of feeding Q2's output through a .0033uf cap then a .001uf cap, Doug's adaptation replaces the .0033uf cap with .0022uf, so you get a taste of the scoop but without the passive loss and with more "bee-buzz".

dont forget that 4.7k resistor!
what you end up with is some serious high pass blended with the out of phase slightly driven low passed signal of the first stage, it really nails the music machine fuzz tone imo.

That`s enough recommendation for me ;D.

Right!  Can't see the picture at work, so I forgot about that.

a little closer to some of there other tunes though, this ones a little raw.

Derringer

sounds like some good core rock n roll

thanks!
