N-channel MOSFET for buff n blend cicuit? and other Qs

i breadboarded it last night but instead of the JFET(?) MPF102/J201 recommended, i used a 2N7000 N-channel MOSFET instead. i took note of the pinout of the 2N7000 versus the vero layout. all connections are where they should be, i used the same values except for the tranny.

it did work alright.  good thing i had an "unhoused" Si Tonebender circuit for this purpose! i just connected the in/out of the FX into the in/out of the BnB circuit, and lug 2 of blend pot goes to amp.

i dont have the recommended trannies right now so i cannot make a comparison of having 2N7000 in this circuit versus the trannies suggested. which leads me to ask: what advantages/pitfalls are there for using a 2N7000 instead of J201/MF102?

also, can i just omit the 100K trimmer on lug 3 of Blend pot? i understand it serves as a valve to control the output coming from the FX to be blended with the clean signal, and introducing series resistance? wouldnt it be much better to not have it and just let the level pot of the FX control how much gets blended, and letting the Blend knob do all the job? but i will think about it later today just in case 

lastly, how does the Buff'n Blend circuit compare to the mini-blender circuit which uses lesser components?
