Help w/FS-5U type switch

Newbie here... I thought for my first stompbox project I would try and make a footswitch for my roland cube 20. I purchased 1 1/4 mono jack, 1 DPDT momentaty switch, and a hammond 1590A. So I installed the jack and switch and soldered 2 leads off the switch to the leads on the jack, I obviously did something wrong it just does not work... Is there anyone who might be able to help me out?

Maybe you picked the wrong leads off the switch? 

Which leads did you pick? A DPDT momentary has 6 points to choose from. You need to pick one pole and then one side of that pole. If the switch is an "X-Wing" switch like this:



Then you want to solder tip and ring on the jack to the middle lug and either the top or bottom lug on the same side depending on whether you want the switch to be "normally open" or "normally closed". Normally closed is when you're not stepping on it, tip-ring are shorted and when you step on it they're disconnected. Normally open is the opposite: no step then tip-ring is disconnected, step and they're shorted.

Also: make sure you didn't flow solder between the tip and ring on the jack and short it out. That's easy to do if you get a little crazy with the solder.

Switching the lugs around worked! I'll put up a few picks shortly. Thank you all for your help I really appreciate it! This is a lot of fun and I'll I've made is a switch... I guarantee I'll have a lot more questions in the future.
