That mercury encrusted "Flourescent Fuzz" from Dragonfly's layout gallery might fit the bill, especially if you put a smallish (.022uf or so) cap to ground at input or increase the output cap. Simplest would be a Bazz Fuss with a Darlington transistor.

I refer to it as "mercury encrusted" because the caps can be pulled out of a blown CFL.
You can use any medium gain transistors.... 2N3904 worked well for me.
If you haven't already, investing in a breadboard is a good idea so you can throw these circuits together and hear what they sound like before committing to soldering.

Josh Homme uses a Foxx Tone Machine clone (with slight mods) called the Ultimate Octave.  The FTM isn't what I'd call easy, though.  For a beginner box that is heavy and bassy, go to the layouts section and build the Fuzzy Elephant.  I have one and use it a lot.  It stacks well with other dirt pedals, too...so if you want to get bass from that one and then chain something else after, you can conduct a symphony of fuzz.

Yeah, that "Fuzzy Elephant" would be the heaviest, maybe even too heavy, ha! Forgot about that one!

no idea what that clip is of exactly ... it's quite sludgy!

but

RunOffGroove's Whisker Biscuit might fit your bill.

Also, you might want to check out the Hot Silicon (it's a tonebender MKII variant with a tonestack). It won't get real sludgy like that clip (unless maybe you increase the bypass cap) but it could probably cop some of those Josh Homme tones.

And regarding Homme using a Foxx TM variant ... I don't think he uses that as his main sound. I think he just uses that fuzz for variation ... at least that's what I gather form listening to Queens.

I've seen pics of the Ultimate Octave (FTM) on his live rig.  It's a crunchy fuzz that is pretty typical of his sound...and the octave setting is also pretty present as well.  I've read that the Ampeg amps are pretty creamy, so if you just think of the FTM sound played through a creamy amp, that sounds as close to QOTSA as you can get with just one stompbox and an amp.  The "Fuzzy Elephant" can set the stage for other fuzz pedals to dial into that sort of territory, if he has some.  Alone, though, despite being very bassy, it has a harsher biting fuzz than it does crunch, and wouldn't work so well.

Make up a Multi-face from ROG and start to tinker.  I like mine with 2n5088's and hard clipping diodes.

I've never heard the Unidrive before ...

The Doomidrive is a modded version of the Unidrive though ... right ?

Any idea of what's been changed? ... aside form the input R switching

kupervaser

Don't know really.
Maybe we could ask Brad.

But i think he just swapped the rotary switch for a potmeter.

Homme also uses a Maestro MPF-1 that I forgot about.  Maybe that's what you're thinking.  Far from a beginner project, though.  And without the proper amp, probably wouldn't be that heavy or fuzzy.

You can cleary hear the MPF-1 here :

I think he uses the Ultimate octave for the big fat distortioned sound, the rest is made with the maestro.

Anyway, a member RnFR (I believe)  made a kind of fat fuzz, "panzer fuzz" . I didn't tried it but the schematic looks good to me, intersting schematic.

Otherwise, the Foxx tone machine, there's a PCB project at  fuzz central.

I made the OS Mutantes fuzz that has been floating around and with the right input caps, it is very thick... not quite sure if it is the sound you want, but it is a very thick fuzz if you use a high value input cap. Also pretty simple.

Have you ever heard of Goatsnake?
Here is what Greg writes:

Greg Anderson on the new Goatsnake L.P. which is set for a September release.

"I was fortunate to use a lot of cool gadgets, including a great amp...the Laney Klipp, which was the amp Iommi/Sabbath used on Master of Reality and Volume 4, VERY @#$%ING HEAVY! Also used a Baritone guitar, and a amazing effects box called a swollen pickle! The songs are a bit different than the previous recordings. I would say the heaviness you've come to expect from us, is heavier, mixed with more melody. Doomier in places but more catchy in others. The drum sounds are amazing.
