BBD Delays and Harsh Distortion With Humbuckers (e.g. AD-3208, EHX DMM)?

I have both of the aforementioned delays and I've noticed that they clip with humbuckers. I'm not talking about the "sweet" overdrive associated with BBD delay lines - it's a harsh and unnatural clipping.

Since I have no scope at the ready, I cannot check where that clipping originates, but I suppose it could come from
- input opamp
- BBD line input
- compander input.

There's only two relevant leads I have so far. One's here: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=69662.0 The other is the mention of "Howard Davis mod" for EHX DMM, which is supposed to fix that problem, but I can find no reference to the changes in that mod.

Could anyone suggest where to look, as I'd love to fix that clipping problem? Thanks in advance!
