Hey everybody, first post here on DIY
I'm going to be ordering the parts for my first pedal soon(tonight, hopefully) but I had a quick question before I ordered it.  I'm building the first schematic here: http://www.home-wrecker.com/bazz.html and was going to build my bass player one, too.  Do I need to change any values to use it for bass?

Jango

Scratch the first question.  Is this parts list enough for 2 bazz fuss?
0611A Jack, DC Power, 2.0 mm BOSS
0303 Box - Taiwanese 'B' Size
0602A Jack, 1/4 in. Stereo Neutrik #NYS230
1400 Capacitor, Electrolytic, Axial 16 V 1 mf. - 100 mf. (4.7 mf.)
1102 Capacitor, Panasonic ECQ-B .056 mf. - .1 mf. (.1 mf.)
0401 Pad-Per-Hole Board Small Single-Side
2015 Transistor 2N5088
2208 Diode 1N914
0904 43K to 220K - Individual (100K)
1001 Alpha Single-Gang 24mm, Linear & Audio Taper, Solder Terms (100K Audio)
0204 Switch - Taiwan X-Wing DPDT

2 of everything except im getting 1 DC Power Jack, and 4 1/4in jacks

All ordered off smallbearelec.com

I'm just working from memory, but it looks good to me.  This is a fun project, that's for sure.

39.55 a decent price for all that?

I usually get the 0611 or the 0611D 2.1mm dc jack, and the 1005A 16mm pots.

Plus, since the main item costs here are shipping and the enclosures, I would suggest getting few extra transistors and resistors and trying out the Deluxe Bazz Fuss at the bottom of the page.  You can use 2 - 2n5088 (or even a 2n5088 and a 2n5089) for the darlington transistor.

I have found that the deluxe sounds really good. I built mine 3 years ago and it has a perm home on my pedalboard.

And yes, $39 for 2 pedals, including enclosures is a good price.

Have Fun!!!

You may want to consider some of the variations of the Bazz Fuss, many of which can be found at the same site you got your schematic. I really like the Darlington configuration when two 5088s are run together. You could try it and see if you like it. A volume knob might also be nice.

Jango

I'll probably mod it eventually, but my current budget was $40, so I couldn't add anything else XD

Bob, what are the differences between the parts I ordered and the ones you get?  I'm a complete newb when it come to pedal building, so it would help to know for the future.

Jango, the 24 mm pots will be harder to deal with, as far as space is concerned in a B size box. The 16 mm will give you more room (especially if you're going for one of the deluxe versions as some have suggested, which I believe have a few extra).

Also, I think the DC jacks he mentioned are a little smaller (I can't remember all these part numbers) and give, again, more room.

For the transistors, the 5088 and 5089 in combination work as a Darlington transistor. I personally haven't built that version (yet), but my super-basic version sounds great. If you double the circuit into itself, well, it gets pretty muffy! I've got mine in a 1590A, making for a nifty little pocket fuzz. It's definitely a quick and easy build and for being is simple as it is, it's somewhat surprising how well it turns out. I'm diggin' mine!

Good luck and have fun!

If you are using it for bass just increase the input and output caps to 4.7uf or so.
But the most important thing is to adjust collector resistor with a trimmer since the optimal bias point is very dependant on transistor's gain.

The DC jacks that I listed use a 9/16" round hole. The one you listed needs a square hole... For me it's just quicker/easier to drill the round hole.

And kudos for coming in under budget!

What is the audio transformer's purpose in the Deluxe circuit? It says its not needed if NO buggered effects preceed the circuit, but I see its only using the primary coils, presumably as a little inductor loop? What exactly does this do to the circuit?
If you put 2 x MPAS13 darlingtons in sequence would it make it huge and nasty?

bobp1339

I never put the transformer in mine, so I can't give you an answer on that...

Square hole?  That sounds like it'll be fun...though it'll just be my pedal; bassist gets a battery clip.  Assuming there's room for a battery in that size of enclosure?

bobp1339

With a bazz fuss, yes, you should be able to fit a battery in there.

The inductor makes the Bazz Fuss believe that anything before it is a guitar coil. This is useful also with a Fuzz Face with a wah before it.

Back again with another question!  Yaaaaayy...
I've got all the parts in front of me, pretty much ready to solder.  however, i'm having powering problems.  I want to use ONLY a DC power jack on one of the pedals i'm building, and I can't find a schematic that shows that.  Could somebody draw up a diagram of how to do it?

Kearns892

Since I don't have permission to from Dano to post this diagram I will just link to it. Just use ctrl F and search for Figure 8.1. If you wire the box up like that, but leave off the battery snap you should be fine.

Jango

Looks good, but how would I wire it up using a DPDT?

Kearns892

If you want true bypass leave out the LED and wire as shown in the FAQ for DPDT

Jango

Tested it last night, at first the volume was lower after turning the pedal on, but I figured out that I had put the transistor in backwards.  Now, however, nothing happens when I turn it on.  The sound comes through exactly the same, and I know i'm sending it through the board.  Any possible problems?
