here is the layout

and heres what i have made

just thought id see if you guys saw anything as im having trouble debugging it and im only getting sound when the switch is in the off position.

also anyone know how to debug live near south yorkshire?

sweeeeeet thanks!

i was a bit confused with the layout (yes iiv read faq but getting lost, but the layout is from the same site as the schematic) sorry for confusion, the schematic is

The French connection

I know, but the pedal i built does not boost...it just increases volume!

Yeah, pin 4 needs to be grounded, so you need a jumper between strip g and strip i.

....and also R3 is wrong, it should be between strip e and strip i.

sweet, i see, just incase it helps... iv done all those readings on the debugging post, heres my results

1.What does it do, not do, and sound like? works when switch is off (no effect), nothing when switched on at all.
2.Name of the circuit = Blackcat od 1
3.Source of the circuit (URL of schematic or project) = http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/pcbs/blackcatlayout.gif (veroboard =
)
4.Any modifications to the circuit? No
5.Any parts substitutions? If yes, list them. op275 to tl072cn
6.Positive ground to negative ground conversion? ??
7.Turn your meter on, set it to the 10V or 20V scale. Remove the battery from the battery clip. Probe the battery terminals with the meter leads before putting it in the clip. What is the out of circuit battery voltage? => 8.62
Now insert the battery into the clip. If your effect is wired so that a plug must be in the input or output jack to turn the battery power on, insert one end of a cord into that jack. Connect the negative/black meter lead to signal ground by clipping the negative/black lead to the outer sleeve of the input or output jack, whichever does not have a plug in it. With the negative lead on signal ground, measure the following:
Voltage at the circuit board end of the red battery lead =8.61
Voltage at the circuit board end of the black battery lead = Attatched to input ring? and 0.00

volt readings are as follows

r1: 8.54 - 8.44
r2: 8.17-0.00
r3: 0.01-0.00
r4: 8.54-8.16
r5: 7.09-7.52
r6: 7.52-7.36
r7: 8.53-7.46
r8: 8.16-7.49
r9: 7.46-0.00
r10: 7.49-7.33

c1: 0-7.09
c2: 0-7.51
c3: 0-7.35
c4: (+)8.54 - (-)0
c5: 7.33-0
c6: 8.16-0
c7: 8.15-0
c8: (+)7.45-(-)0

IC Legs:

.7.08      8.15
7.54      8.15
7.50      7.48
8.01      7.45

D1: (band side)8.54-0

Resistance

tested under:

2000 ohms
r4: 410

20k ohms
r1: 0.41
r2: 9.33

200k ohms
r6: 21.5
r7: 51.2
r9: 51.00
r10: 21.6

2000k ohms
r3: 981
r8: 965
r5: 470

they are all the readings i get in volts/ohms for the corresponding parts on the vero board diagram.

thanks in regards to the ground thing, (cant believe i didn't see that theres nothing connected to it, plus r3 was my mistake on designing the board, it does go to the right strips i just missed one on designing it. (just going to solder the groun) would be sweet if it worked as im gigging tonight lol

markeebee

....also I can''t see R1 and R2 (10k) on the schematic or layout....

markeebee

Oops, sorry, I just posted some incorrect info about the jumper between pin 5 and 9V

dimebagslash123

would r1 and r2 stop it working? just solderd the ground going to try it now and then if not working then just the other jumper, and then if not working sould i remove r1 and r2?
cheers

The French connection

R1 and R2 in serial = 20K from 9V+ to ground? I don't see this on the schem...and on the pcb layout tough...

Edit: Oups too slow!

You should get some sound with r1 and r2 in place, but it won't be good sound because they will adjust the bias voltage to the chips.  Go on, take em out, you know it makes sense.... :icon_biggrin:

dimebagslash123

sweet, ill do it now, should i cut the jumper you said?
it works now, but..... when vol is all way up it cuts out and, when i play a string it sounds like an old arcade game with a nackered speaker lol, its verry hummy where as the video iv seen of it the sound is very sharp and 'cuts through', any ideas? (jus going to cut r1 + r2) *gets pliers 'muahahahaha'

Electric Warrior

pins 3 and 5 of the IC should connect.
and I think two strips for ground are a bit of a waste. so is the empty space on the right. you could the componets on the far right five holes to the left and it would still fit in.

markeebee

DON'T CUT THE JUMPER!!!!!   My mistake, sorry.

Do take out r1 and r2, also you need a connection between pin 3 and pin 5.

Maybe you've got the vol control wired the wrong way round?

*Too slow*  EW beat me to the pin 3 / 5 thing.  Least it means I'm right    :-[

Electric Waz - please excuse my ignorance - who's that in your avatar pic?

dimebagslash123

sweet ill do the 3 and 5. didnt cut the jumper lol. new thing now though, cut out r1 and r2, now both the dials controll volume and theres no effect... the volume controll works as normal, and the gain seems to turn the volume down when i turn it clockwise... just going to try the pin soldering

curiosity.... pin 3 is 3rd down left side, pin 5 would be bottom right or top right?
