I just recieved this question from a fellow in a band in my area.  Can anyone help me figure this out?

"I have a MXR Dyna Comp pedal that is having problems. I know it's not the greatest sounding Comp out there but it gets the job done for me. Anyhow, lately it's been farting out on me. I set it up with the level at 3 o'clock, and the sensitivity at 9 o'clock, and just leave it on all the time, and it's the first thing in my pedal chain. It's also powered by a high end power supply. After a while, which can be 3 minutes or 5 hours, it starts making noise. It's a kind of crackling or scratching noise, and it gets worse the higher you turn up the Sensitivity. Nothing high pitched. It makes the noise even if my guitar is unplugged and the pedal is on(I don't have to be playing and it makes noise). Checked all my cables and isolated all my pedals, and it's definitely this pedal.

IHow old is it ?
I'd replace all of the electros.

+1, and make sure everything is clean inside (pots, wiring, solder joints, etc) while you have it open.

The comp is only 2 years old. I would not think the electro's could go bad by now but who knows. I will try your suggestions and swap them out.
While i am there should I replace them with metal film ones?

   cCan that be done?

Might that make for a better pedal?

.......as always I appreciate your help

Yeah , 2 years seems kind of short .
'Better?'=subjective. I just use the ones available locally, However they are very good and I have the peace of mind in knowing that I've used quality components.
Therefore If a project does'nt work then its my fault , and it saves time looking for Gremlins.
