I just built one with a toggle switching between germanium and LED clippers.  The germs are much lower output than the LEDs, but have a nice warmth and compression to them.  The LEDs are ridiculously loud and crunchy.  If anyone is not satisfied with the SOS with the usual 1N4147/1N914, try either... or BOTH of these options!

I think it sounds best with assymetrical clipping with 1n914's being used. Sounds like real classic  rock to me, But i also like replacing a 1n914 on the side with 2 of them with one germanium diode. It adds a little bit of compression which does sound nice. Using LED's dont sound that great to me but its all about opinion

Try using three diodes in series in the clipping section.
