Picked up some resistors from mickey mouser. Ordered some 1k vishay's. Here's the bands:
BROWN
BLACK
RED
RED
(ORANGE 5th band FOR TOLERANCE?)

They are met film (5 bands), but tan in color. Package says 1K, and they do read 1K on the DMM.
Now I'd interpret this as a 10.2K for MF.
Am I missing something?

idiot savant

that's 1k 2%

only 4 of the bands are used with the last red as tolerance.

then what's the orange? temperature rating?

Taylor

Yep.

edit: Sorry, no. Not temp rating, but temp coefficient,  which means the amount of resistance drift with temperature. Orange is 15 ppm.
